Well I like yuri better but i think thats because i am a guy. But I agree that most of yuri/shoujo ai doesn't have a good plot (I enjoyed StoPani)... But some yaoi/shonen ai too doesn't have plot.
Women like yaoi cause women write about yaoi. And most yuri it's a male who write. So it's natural that women prefer yaoi and men prefer yuri (i think.). |

I like either, more so if there's a story behind it. =p
As for gender preferences, I think more women prefer yuri as compared to men preferring yaoi. |

I personally prefer yaoi. I am not sure about the bookstore but base on the availability of scanlation i think yaoi are more popular. It is easy to inderstand since yaoi often have good story development, better drawing style. On the other hand, yuri are often seen as a kind of hentai.
It's true that boys seem to be attracted to yuri but, as I say, they do not see them as yuri but hentai. Girl, however, can read both. |

Yaoi is definitely more popular than yuri if you see around the net. Dunno how it works out in Japan.

From what I see, a lot of yuri-esque scenes get thrown into the regular male-oriented shows. Even if it's just another girl grabbing a female's chest, it's almost part of that genre. Yaoi doesn't have that counterpart, not that I've seen. Instead, it seems to have developed into it's own genre. Things might start to change now (Ouran, for example, did have it's yaoi-esque undertones) but that could be why yaoi appears to be a larger genre than yuri.
As for preference, I'll take either or. Just give me good art and good plot/characterization. |

Yuri just doesn't have the backing that yaoi does. Yaoi is "for girls" and hentai is "for guys" so yuri just gets left behind sadly. Overall I enjoy both both yuri and yaoi but I prefer yuri simply because girls are more attractive to me.

I don't think yuri has a following anywhere near as big as yaoi and I don't think it ever will, but if it were to be more available and promoted more the popularity might increase, but not exponentially. I think that guys tend to like yuri way more than girls and obviously it's mostly only girls who like yaoi, but I've tried reading yuri manga and watching yuri manga like Strawberry Panic but I just couldn't get into it, I felt like something was missing, but I'm really a hardcore yaoi fan anyway.

hmm. i think maybe yaoi has more mangaka doing it than yuri? and the boys in yaoi manga are really hot??? haha. that's just my opinion. but ElderKain is right that girls like yaoi, and boys like yuri. aha!!! so maybe....there are more girls in the world that's why yaoi is more popular!! well, the girls > boys part is true. i personally like yaoi. but i used to think it was "ewww!" but now i say "oooh..." don't know why. i just love the artwork and stories. that's why now, i'm part of a yaoi scanlation group! haha....it's really cool... but i haven't read any yuri manga though. haven't really crossed my mind to do so. maybe i will in the future to compare.. ^__^
