Major digital distributors Direct2Drive, GamersGate and Impulse have refused to stock Infinity Ward's highly anticipated shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on PC due to its reliance upon Valve Software's rival distribution platform Steam, Voodoo Extreme reports.

"We believe strongly that when you buy a game from us, you shouldn't be forced to install and run a 3rd party software client to be able to play the game you purchased," D2D explains in a statement masquerading as a listing for Modern Warfare 2 in its store. A representative later told Kotaku "We don't believe games should force the user to install a Trojan Horse."

Modern Warfare 2 on PC will use Steam and Valve's Steamworks framework for DRM purposes as well auto-update, achievement and anti-cheat features, among others.

However, both Direct2Drive and GamersGate sell ACE Team's Zeno Clash--which requires Steam. D2D also offers several other Steam-based titles, including Empire: Total War and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2.

"We share some of the same concerns as Direct2Drive over the bundling of the Steam client with the game," Impulse told Voodoo Extreme. "The most obvious issue is the forced inclusion of a competitor's store that blocks us from carrying the game."

This latest Modern Warfare 2 upset comes hot on the heels of controversies over a terrorist sequence and the fact that the PC version will not support dedicated servers.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is expected to be one of the biggest titles of the year when it arrives for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 10, with retailer GameStop reporting that pre-orders are "the highest for any title we've ever sold."

Modern Warfare 2 Pirate Thwarted by Investigators

A report in VentureBeat tells a tale of software piracy in our own backyard, and its serious consequences.

Eighteen-year-old Christian Del Amo was arrested by Miami-Dade police officers yesterday after allegedly attempting to sell pirated copies of Modern Warfare 2.

On October 30, Activision Blizzard hired online investigation firm IPCybercrime to look into suspicious posts on Craigslist advertising Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundles for sale, roughly a week and a half before their release date.

Posts in the piracy forums on xbox360iso.com seemed to indicate that Del Amo had obtained a copy of the game and cracked the copy protection this past weekend. The fact that pirated digital release copies of Modern Warfare 2 hit the torrent sites the next day doesn't seem like mere coincidence.

Investigators used social networking sites, user posts in online piracy forums, and several sting operations to identify those involved in the pirating operation, which ultimately lead to Del Amo's arrest yesterday.

Prior to this run-in, Del Amo had a site for selling modified Xbox 360 hard drives loaded with pirated software. For just $150, he'd sell you a 250GB Western Digital hard drive containing 125 pirated games.

"We plug leaks every day," said Rob Holmes, owner of IPCybercrime, "but this was one of the biggest ones of the year."

 Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in
 the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of
 its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern
 combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of
 Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and 
 options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player,
 multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the
 most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series.

 Modern  Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in 
 the  popular  Call  of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead 
 of  its  predecessor,  Call  of  Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in 
 modern  combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier 
 Call  of  Duty  games.  This  modern  approach  brings with it new weapons, 
 action  and  options.  Coupled  with  a variety of gameplay modes including 
 single  player,  multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined 
 to  be  one  of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the 
 Call of Duty series. 
           
 Story     
 The  storyline  of  Modern  Warfare  2 picks up where the events of Call of 
 Duty  4:  Modern  Warfare  left  off.  The  ultranationalist Russian leader 
 Zakhaev  has  been  eliminated,  but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir 
 Makarov,  is  an  even  bigger  danger.  Having  made a successful play for 
 power,  Intel  indicates  that  he  is extending the reach of his influence 
 well   beyond  the  borders  of  Mother  Russia,  causing  a  stir  in  the 
 international  community  and  prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. 
 Task  Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta 
 Force  operatives,  British  SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you 
 are  Sergeant  Gary  "Roach"  Sanderson,  with  the hero of Call of Duty 4, 
 "Soap"  MacTavish,  promoted  to  Captain,  making  an appearance as an NPC 
 (non-player  character)  and  your  commanding  officer. The elimination of 
 Makarov  and  his  underlings  at  any  cost  is  your number one priority, 
 regardless where the fight occurs. 
           
 Gameplay  
 The  latest  release  in arguably the most successful tactical first-person 
 shooter  franchise  of  all-time,  gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the 
 same  winning  and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In 
 the  single  player  campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they 
 take  on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. 
 Each   mission  is  built  around  a  particular  objective,  with  players 
 utilizing  some  level  of  guidance  from NPC characters, including "Soap" 
 MacTavish,  and  aided  in navigation by the game's heads up display (HUD). 
 Along  the  way  players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry 
 and  and  vehicles,  as  well  as be able to customize weapons with gadgets 
 attached to them. 
           
 Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is 
 heavilyance which perks will be available at each number and can even 
 gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye 
 towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also 
 features help to players experiencing "death streaks," multiple 
 consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches. focused   on   multiplayer   
 gameplay.  The  different  multiplayer  modes, available  both  in  local 
 play and online, contain plenty of customization options  and revolve 
 around different strategies ranging from the every man for  himself  
 action  of  "Free-for  All,"  the  classic  team-based fun of "Capture  
 the  Flag  and  the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and 
 Destroy,"  just  to  name  a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the 
 "Perk" System  that  players  may  be familiar with from earlier in the 
 franchise. Through   this  system  players  gain  additional  abilities,  
 weapons  and benefits  as  they  gain experience in combat. This can be 
 done by leveling up,  but another important way way is through "kill 
 streaks," the number of enemies  eliminated in succession. These are 
 available beginning with three kills  and  include  the ability to call 
 for supply drops, predator missile strikes,  helicopter  gunships  and

 Special Ops Co-op Mode 
 Along  with  a  single  player  mode and multiple multiplayer modes, Modern 
 Warfare  2  also  features  an  unique  third main play option, Special Ops 
 Mode.  Available  both  online  and  in  local  play,  Special  Ops Mode is 
 designed  to  provide  a distinct time-based play option, featuring special 
 scenarios  not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take 
 on.  This  mode  can  be played either alone or with a friend, again either 
 locally   or   online,   with   local  co-op  play  including  split-screen 
 functionality.

Video gamers are being asked to join a Facebook group set up to help defend games from critics.

Set up by MP Tom Watson, the group aims to coordinate responses to articles in the media which, gamers claim, do not give a fair view of their hobby.

Mr Watson set up the group in reaction to comments from fellow Labour MP Keith Vaz who strongly criticised Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

The game goes on sale on 10 November and is expected to break sales records.

Quoted in the Daily Mail, Mr Vaz said he was "absolutely shocked" by the violence portrayed in the game. Modern Warfare 2 is rated 18 in the UK.

Set in a near-future scenario, Modern Warfare 2 sees The West engaged in fight for survival against Russian ultra-nationalists.

Mr Vaz's disquiet centres around one section in which undercover soldiers pose as terrorists and are asked to help shoot civilians. Footage of the section caused controversy when it was leaked onto the internet.

The MP for Leicester East pledged to raise the issue in Parliament on the day prior to the release.

Publisher Activision said the section was "not representative of overall experience". Warning screens advise players that the scene may be upsetting.

Announcing the Gamers' Voice group on Twitter, Mr Watson said the group was for gamers that want to form a pressure group.

The Facebook description of Gamers' Voice describes it as "unashamedly pro-video games".

"We aim to discuss how UK video gamers can find their voice in newspapers and government," it said.

Title challenge

More than 10,000 stores across the world, including 320 plus in the UK, are expected to open at midnight to let gamers get their hands on the title.

Although the game has not yet gone on sale, it is already breaking sales records. Online retailer Amazon said the pre-order sales are already 50% higher than for Grand Theft Auto 4 - which until now had the most successful release ever.

Play.com say that, at the peak of demand, it was getting more than 150 pre-orders per minute.

Piers Harding-Rolls - an analyst with Screen Digest - told BBC News there was a huge anticipation for the game.

"It's a traditional first person shooter game which in terms of the game space is one of the most popular between 18-35 year-old males.

"'With forecast worldwide sales over 10 million in the run up to Christmas, Modern Warfare 2 expected sales revenues compare very well with the biggest blockbuster movie releases," he said.


Time line

The series started life back in 2003, using the Quake game engine. It was set in a WWII environment letting users play various missions as a British, American, and Russian soldier.

Although popular with gamers, it was not until the fourth instalment of the game - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - that it really became mass market.

"The last product by the developer Infinity Ward - Modern Warfare - was very good quality and in terms of sales and keeps on selling. There was no real decline in price over a long period of time," said Mr Harding-Rolls.

While the plot of the first Modern Warfare followed a vaguely plausible line, this latest version sees players hunting the leader of a radical Russian ultranationalist organisation called Vladimir Makarov.

"As far as the story goes, Makarov is this super villain and you are this task force," Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling said in a recent interview.

"And it's good versus evil. So we really like to be cinematic but also not let that ruin the fun."

The game looks set to prove highly profitable for publisher Activision.

"With an average sales price of $60 and estimated wholesale revenues of around $400m, the publisher can expect a very positive Christmas quarter," said Mr Harding-Rolls.

However, UK prices are expected to be higher than that, with console versions of the game coming with a recommended retail price of £55 and PC editions retailing at £50.
