dmc 3 is hard.
i get bored because i have a hard time getting very far.

been playing other games i finally bought god of war.
which is similar to dmc 3 i'd say
but my cousin was using my ps2, he got the infinite item cheat from ar max
and kept on using holy water

i have play DMC 3 for some time but i don't have good control of the character and dante style especially RoyalGuard,i can't do just guard very often...,

i have beat the game on Dante yet i still have hard time defeating all boses...,
it' hard to get SS rank(no damage,no item,enough red orbs,complete in time)

i have try DMC 4 on cyber cafe,i prefer Nero than Dante coz' of Nero's Devil Bringger...

I totally hate Nero, hes a whiny little bitch ass pussy with an extremely overpowered arm. Unlike Dante who is some wise cracking guy who has bad jokes and seems to be able to get out of trouble a lot. And Vergil is just a creepy guy, who's cool in a mysterious way. anyhow I went out and bought DMC 3 special edition and played through it. ITS SO MUCH EASIER : D and i love turbo mode, it reminds me of playing super smash bros on lighting speed, i pretty much never get hit cause i can keep up with the speed. and i love playing as vergil, those ice swords are bad ass.

Yeah, they need to hurry up with a DMC5 already....it's time we started hearing something about it I think.

DMC3 is still my favorite of the series. DMC4 was interesting but the only thing I actually like about it is
the arena mode. I love me some games that piss me off because they really challenge me. (DMC, NGS, ect)

I have played all the DMC's and I will list them in the order of difficulty I think they have. Note: DMC3 and DMC3:SE will be listed as two different games.

DMC3>DMC>DMC3:SE>DMC4>DMC2

That is after playing through all the games on every difficulty.
And to answer the original question, it was decently hard. It would beat you down but it gives you a good feeling when you finally beat down Virgil 3 without items.
And another note, Heaven or Hell mode, everything dies instantly(including bosses). If they have some kind of shielding you have to go through that first though. In DMC4 though there was a mode called Hell and Hell mode where you die in one hit while all the enemies have normal health. Though DMC4 does give you 3 lives per level in Heaven or Hell and Hell and Hell modes.

Bosses had were more object based then HP based, but they didn't all die in 1 hit. You just had to hit it maybe twice in 2 special places then you win.
