It highly depends on where on this planet you are. For example, if you are in Somalia, where government doesn't exist, it is perfectly legal to do anything that pleases you. On the other hand, if you are in Japan, you can face criminal charges.

My view is this: any kind of downloading that doesn't put money in the pockets of the creators is illegal. Services like itunes is not illegal, because you pay for what you download and the money is going to where it is supposed to.

As much as I like to think that downloading is an exception to stealing, it really isn't. Not that I don't download (I do buy what I can), I just cant shake the feeling that anytime I click on the megaupload or mediafire link, I am doing something wrong. Stupid consciousness. :(

Downloading anything from a website that doesn't hold a license to have the anime and distribute means it's illigaly hosted.
