Well, If you can salvage any parts from your old pc (HD/Disk drive/ram/maybe psu?) Then you could easily get a quad pc/8800gt :)

Or go for the new AMD quad if you want...It's now has power full has a intel, But it's about 20-50$ cheaper...

for gaming get a desktop with AMD series. Intel ones are a bit faster and for rich people... They cost a bit more. Save your self a few bucks and try to get a good vid card. It doesn't always have to be Nvidia 8800 GT. You can get a similiar performing vid card from amd series for much much lower price. For rams... two gigs are plenty. As for HD there are lots of cheap ones out there and 200GB is sufficient. For gaming i think CRT monitors (far ones) are good for gaming, i mean if you prefer the LCD ones thats okay too... (also, if your planning to build your own you have to consider what motherboard, case and power supply to buy beucase they all have to correspond with another) with 800 bucks you can get a decent one

Assuming your getting one from the store, any computers will do. Seeing how 99% of the stores carry vista now, and the lowest requirement for vista is 128vram and atlest 1.5ghz so it'll be good enough for gaming ( for most new games minimum specs anyway ).

I just got a new gateway for around $900; 3gbram / 3.7ghz / 256vram. Pretty good deal imo.

If you're getting a computer for gaming get something without Vista. Vista has multiple driver problems, it's inefficient with everything it processes, it hogs resources and it's wicked annoying. At this point in time it's only use is to look nice but it even fails at that since they go overboard on it. XP is much better although it still has it's problems, and it's Windows which sucks anyways.

As a Mac fanboy I'd tell you to get a Mac since they run Mac and Windows and the hardware is very well manufactured, but it's completely out of your price range so it would be a poor choice. What you should do is build your own computer since they usually cost less and have better specs.

Regarding multi-core processors, in the coming months more and more games and programs will start to implement hyper-threading and better thread management so they'll use all of the cores instead of just one while increasing performance for other running processes. You can already see this in games today since most if not all run more efficiently with a multi-core processor. What you need to decide is how long you plan to keep your computer. If it's going to be a long time an $800 computer really isn't the best idea but you should probably try to find the highest specced computer so it doesn't go obsolete the day after you get it. Highest spec would include a multi-core processor so they're a good idea.

But remember that just because you have a multi-core processor doesn't mean your computer won't bottleneck somewhere. You should also consider bus speeds, RAM speeds and what type you're going to need, hard drive speeds and capacities, graphics clock frequency and RAM capacity, and possibly other processing like a physx card. If all these components work in tandem you'll have a fast and efficient computer that you can rely on to give you a good gaming experience.

My recommendation if you haven't bought your new pc yet.
For $800 (excluding 17" monitor($200) and cd/dvd drives)
Motherboard : MSI P6N Platinum or Diamond ($200)
Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo E8400($180).
VGA : XFX 9600GT 512MB($180)
RAM : Anything 2GB but if you want to overclock, i use A-Data Vitesta Extreme Edition which was $60
Harddisk : Up to you. If you plan to have alot of files or games, then buy large one like 500GB.
PSU : About 450W($70)

Hope this helps :)

I think this would be a good rig. I just hope you won't be trying to play Crysis on an $800 computer.

A 9600gt should be enough to play crysis on low/medium.

But you could get a Gigabyte GA-P35 Mobo for about 100$ cheaper.

damn weird txt crap

Yeah low or medium but you have to admit that everyone wants to play it on full. That would be so sick.
