Help with video card

Heyo, after taking a look through my computer and then comparing it to the games I want to play, I've realized that my current video card simply sucks. Can anyone help me out in choosing a reasonably priced video card for a person under a budget?

Re: Help with video card

Well first of all, What kind of mobo do you have? (AGP or PCI)

But I would say just get a 8800GT, There alot of bang for your buck :)

Re: Help with video card

I replaced my old graphics card with an Nvidia 7600 which isn't too bad (old on decided to start a camp fire). So you might want to consider buying one of those. I think Blu's suggestion of 8800GT is top of the range so it'll cost you an arm and a leg and maybe you ear too.

Re: Help with video card

I hate to be a spoil sports but if you are short of cash then you cannot play most of the latest gaming with high quality since you need a high performance machine which can cost lots of money.

wait for the price to drop or get a job, I think there is too many games to play. price will drop when newer stuff appear and make the old stuff old but those who are rich can afford it.

Re: Help with video card

Hmm...I wanna keep up to date to about 2-3 years ago, thats all. When I'm refering to 'budget', I mean a relaitively cost-effective card, not state of the art, or its so high tech I have to sell my soul just to pay a fraction of it.

Game wise...I guess I want to be able to play games like guild wars, half-life 2, or illusion h-games with all the options and graphical effects turned up.

I think my comp is an agp, though I don't really have a surefire way to know. I got it around 04', a dell.

Hope this makes things a bit clearer.

Re: Help with video card

I've got both Guild Wars and Half-life 2 and my card seems to run GW pretty well. Haven't tried it with HL2 since I uninstalled it so can't tell you how it plays with that game?

Anyway as my previous post said, i've got an AGP Nvidia GeForce 7600 GS from PNY Technologies. Oh and it needs 300W power supply.

Hope thats helps.

Re: Help with video card

You can get a 8800GT for pretty cheap,
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I don't think a 7600 can run most of the newer games, And if it can at shitty frame rates :P With a 8800GT It should/will allow you to play new games for atleast a couple years :D Hell, Could probably find some used 8800gt's on ebay for cheap, Seeing has the 1GB just came out...

EDIT: What dimension or w/e is your dell? Try checking google for its mobo, That will tell you if its AGP or PCI-E 1/2

Re: Help with video card

3-4 year old comp, probably has AGP, only want to keep up with older games...I would say something cheap yet effective like an ati x1950gt, older cards with a decemt amount of power but lacking more modern features.
