dvd plays in black and white?

so i recently bought a dvd player, a dvd-S53 model, alrigth so i hook it up, i see the nice blue dvd screen at the startup and then put in my dvd and press play.
Thing is, its in black and white and the dvd is supposed to be playing in color.
I'm having it played with a standard tv and there is nothing wrong with my dvd because i played it with another dvd player.
Any solutions to make it play in color?

Oh and another thing i noticed, when it was playing, the picture was kinda "downward" like it didn't fit in the screen leaving a black letterbox at the top.

did you check the TV settings? someone might have turned the color setting all the way to black and white.

is the dvd widescreen (black letterboxes on top+bottom) or just the top having the black?

it, seems you have sort of .Pal / NTSC incompatibality problem.
by the way have you make an exact lock on the channel you choosed for dvd player.
and have you checked the connection on between the tv and your player.
have y checked with another dvd.

and by the way why so disappointed about it it's sort of classic ,i remember me and one of my friend have paid extra money to a photographer to made our pictures look about 50 year old when he print them .
it worth it every body wanted to know how we made such images.
