Alright, this is something I know very little about, and I don't have the time to thoroughly research it.
However, I was hoping to find out what some of you guys think about the prophecy for the year 2012.
I've heard from several sources that the Mayans predicted the end of the world(or the end of time, some people say) occuring in the year 2012. I've also heard some people say that the prophecy doesn't say that, and the end of the world is actually coming sometime in the 50th century. So basically I'll list everything I "know" about this prophecy.
- The Mayans predicted it.
- The Mayans have never been wrong in any of their prophecies thus far.
- Some believe that the 2012 is a misinterpretation and that the end of the world is thousands of years away yet.
- Albert Einstein predicted that the world will end 4 years after bees are extinct(or possibly just one species), and the numbers are dropping, and appear to lead to extinction sometime in 2008.
- Somewhere in the bible code it says that the world will end in 2012.
Discuss please.

You should know that the mayan predict the death and rebirth of the world. Even though the world would end they also said it would be reborn again a new. Their prediction always follows a cycle, in which the end of the cycle massive destruction and death comes, but out of it life can flourish once again. Thus the prophecy could me the end of western civilization, or the deaths of million (or maybe billions) of people, but it will not mean the end of mankind.

It'll fall on an election year too. I think it's Dec. 12th or 24th that the actual day.
For the longest time I assumed it would be the government/politicans (of the world) that would bring this about but now I belive they are just puppets for the corporations that are really f-ing things up for the millions of people out there hurting.

It's clearly not going to be the end of the world.
- The Mayans predicted it.
Not true. 2012 is simply the end of the Mayan's calander and it makes no predictions by itself.
- The Mayans have never been wrong in any of their prophecies thus far.
Never heard of any of the prophecies, but I'm betting they were something vague and obvious like "there will be a big war".
- Some believe that the 2012 is a misinterpretation and that the end of the world is thousands of years away yet.
Don't know anything about this. Although at the moment the only confirmed 'end of the world' is in a few billion years when the Sun becomes a red giant. Maybe they meant that.
- Albert Einstein predicted that the world will end 4 years after bees are extinct(or possibly just one species), and the numbers are dropping, and appear to lead to extinction sometime in 2008.

The Bible Code is a load of crap. Anyone can find prophecies in something after the fact or if they're looking for something specific. I'm sure you'd find the same prophecies in Shakespeare if you looked hard enough.

Alright, I did some research on this and can might be able to explain it.
The Mayans Calculated that the sun would be at what they considered the center of the solar system on december 12, 2012. They also calculated that the solar system would be over a dark spot in the universe, which they perceived at the center of the universe. This would mean that the sun would be in the center of the universe on that date. They also believed that this dark spot was a portal to hell, and that once the sun got there, it would be devoured by demons.
This date is also the date in which the mayan's UNiversal calender reaches the end, that is, date 13.00.0.00.0, which they perceived to be the end of the circle and the destruction and potential rebirth of the earth.
They also believed that there was a FAR more advanced ancient civilization that existed before them. And that civilization say this great cataclysm and left 13 objects that could prevent it.
Bonus points if someone could name what the objects were.
HINT: It's 13 of the same object, but each one is a different color. And 8 have allegedly been discovered.

Heck they predicted it will end in 2000, and 2006/2007.
Instead of waiting for the 'end of the world', fulfill your lives, don't wait for something that may or may not happen.

I'm sure you've people have heard of them.
The Legend of the Skulls plox?
The legend of the 13 crystal Skulls. An ancient far more advanced civilization msyterious disappeared. But they left behind 13 Crystal Skulls. Allegedly, they could see the future, and predicted the cataclysm. They left behind the Crystal Skulls for the races of the future to discover. If all 13 skulls are found, they could prevent the cataclysm from happening.
The Mayans just assumed that 2012 was when the cataclysm could be.
Look up more info for yourself, I'm feeling lazy right now

I'm not sure about the prediction... But if it's about the end of the world then i guess only human can bring forth such a tragedy upon themself since mankind are part of the occupant of Planet Earth.
Rising global temperature, melting of glasier, rising sea level, destruction of ozone layer, landslide...... Who is the main cause except human!?

The way I heard it, 12/21/2012 was the date, and as far as 51st century, it is supposed to be the year 5300 or some such on the Mayan calender. It was not supposed to be the end of the World, but it was a MAJOR turning point: The end of the Fourth age of man. The death of 90% or more of mankind, and the rise of a new higher form of man.
Based on this, it could be any of a number of things, or a combination of same. Global warming, if An Inconvenient truth was right, could end the glaciers, raise sea level globally, etc. Most of the worlds population is on the Worlds coastline.
Artificial Intelligence/cybernetics. Both are close, both could kill us. Combined, well, think of the Borg.
World War, with following mutations caused by the radioactive fallout.
Least likely of all, mankind might pull our collective heads out of our colons and put things right ourselves. Given our level of Technology, killing off 90% of mankind as a method of Synthetic Selection could fix a lot of the problems facing us as a race. Or getting most of the population off-planet and settled elsewhere could do the trick to, although it seems like the technology needed is much farther off than 2012.

I certainly Believe that the World will not end, in 2012.
Do not be Mistaken The World Will End, but the reason why ALL perdictions of the End of the World have been false, was that they attributed date unto The Time.
Where did these Prophecies come from?
All of them originated From religion, but since only ONE religion can be right and most of them are used for aristcratic methods( mayans for instance), we can rule out all of them, one fact is that all religions who gave a certain date to The Hour, where all wrong, and so the only one which actually does not give it a date and leaves it to the Will of God, must be right, be not mistaken,
I am not some fanatic christian, actually I am a Muslim( & IM NOT AN ARAB!!) and in Islam ,ONLY after Jesus( peace be upon him comes back) and tell the people of what lies evil men have sent out against him after his departure , and will rule the world with the Law Given to Muhammad( peace be upon him) and he will set everything straight, after he defeats the Anti-Christ, Love will rain...
then, and only then will the world experience peace ,and will God take the souls of the believers with the a gentle breeze of wind.
After that the Hour will be Established, and ALL of Creation will stand before their Lord, The One Loving and Forgiving Eternally.
P.s Technology will be dead by then..

Hmmm..
D'oh!
Nobody knows when the world is going to end.
Like the past issues about year 2000... and then 1999 month 9 date 9 on 9?
It's all fake..
Nobody knows.
Only GOD knows when, and I don't think God will happily tell us when, since the world will go even crazier than it already is..
Nobody knows whatever God is planning.
Nothing is good or bad, it's just our perception that makes something is whatever we think it is.

The Mayan prophecy is misinterpreted, but not in the sense of the date. First of the all, the prediction is not for the end of the world, but the end of an age. The date in 2012 is actually when the sun is perfectly aligned with the center of the galaxy. The Mayan calendar is extremely cyclical. Everything repeats itself over and over again, and this new alignment is merely the end of one major cycle and the beginning of another. So, you could interpret this as the complete destruction and renewal of the world, or simply as a major turning point or technological breakthrough that will dawn a completely new age.
In Mayan mythology (a funny term applied to religious beliefs nobody believes in anymore) I think this alignment represented the release of a creator god or something... I'm pretty fuzzy on this part, though. I don't remember specifics that well... I saw all this on a discovery channel special, and I just didn't care as much about the mythology behind the prediction.

mayans have been wrong about alot of thier prophecies. nobody just bothers to mention the wrong ones. besides when an ancient civilization predicts doom, you have to consider the context. the mayan's "world" was basically just south american. the end of the world for them happened when they were wiped out. which could very well be considered the resolution to thier doom prophecy.

Sylvius
12-14-2007, 09:22 PM
maybe but how do you know thier 2012 refers to our calender? not the chinese calendor. or any other number of non gregorian calenders. coincidences are jsut that. you know how many doomsday prophecie's thier are? rasputin wrote like 9 different one's 8 were wrong and 1's still pending. then there's various other oriental sages that predicted the end of the world.
let's not forget of course the christian prediction for the end of the world as interpretated by what's his name. anyway turns out he interpreted wrong and instead of acknowledging his failure he ended up turning his followers into a new church. ever heard of the 7th day adventists? they're still waiting for the apocalypse.
remember the year 2000? everyone thought that was it too. millions of religious fruitcakes read all the sign's of the apocalypse. if you take just he christian signs for the apocalypse alone you can pick out the signs EVERYDAY if you looked really hard.
you know the locust plague? that's actually a very interesting natural occurance that happened like 4 years ago in death valley. there was this huge monsoon like rain for 2 days and it woke up the 100 year old locust larvae deep in the ground. they filmed it and it was on discovery, the desert literally became an idealic valley of life. all kinds of flowers bloomed over night. and then the locusts matured and ate EVERYTHING. billions and billions of them covered the desert, took em 3 days to eat everything barren. then they laied thier eggs deep int he ground and died. waiting for the next monsoon like rain. most people thought that was the sign of the apocalypse but it's something that happens fairly regularly every few hundred years.
you gotta understand that when people in ancient times saw these rare events taht happen once in a lifetime, or even once every 2 lifetimes they thought for sure it was the end of hte world. since it was such a wierd and odd occurance.
in a few decades the north and south poles of the earth will switch. if we didn't understand the reasoning behind this and understand the science we would probably hail it as the end of hte world, birds migrating north, animals getting confused. all sorts of crap could happen when the poles switch birds flying into each other. and some fanatic will claim it's the end of hte world.
here's the thing about prophecies, wrong ones are forgotten lucky ones are remembered. there are billions of propechies, a couple are bound to be spot on. it's just probability.
Sylvius
12-14-2007, 09:24 PM
oh yea also, we DO know the world WILL absolutely end one day. like 300 billion years from now when our sun dies. but even then the world doesn't really end, new life may yet spring up. we're out of reach of the explosion of the sun, and with a black hole to replace it with the same gravitational pull as the current sun earth will still be in orbit. at least they think it might still be. therefore it's possible new life forms could spring up.
anyway it's all relative the end of the world for an ant is much different then the end of the world for humans, or cockroaches.

Well it's believed that the calender ends December 12th, 2012. Mayans have a calender that ends, but that doesn't prove that it's the end of the world. Their calender tends to reset and something big is suppose to happen. The calender reseted a few times before on crucial dates on mankind's history. It reseted once when the first Spanish explorer set foot on the west (Christopher Columbus). And I might be wrong but it also reseted on the day of their mysterious difference's. Anywho, it tells us 2 things.
1. The calender is reseting
2. Something big is gonna happen.
- We are not sure if it will be the end of the world.
Funny thing is, a comet/meteor is expected to pass by the earth in the year 2010-2012 area. Scientists predicted that it would just be close enough to see very well. But, if their predictions are off too much, that large of an object could destroy the world in an instant or do some serious damage.
But, if the world isn't destroyed. It's no problem.

Well technically this comet is gonna get really close to earth the first time around, but within 70 years it will cross paths with us again. This time it will not miss. From what I've heard the power of destruction is strong enough to kill the world 30 times over.
