Need a computer to play online?

hey guys. I want go online with the xbox 360. I've been told that i need a computer to get the service turned on. then i could just connect the xbox to the modem and play. others are saying that i just need to call the isp and have them send me a modem and turn the service on. then connect the xbox. i really don't want to buy a computer at the moment. can anyone clear up the air? any help would be appreciated.
