View Full Version : Why is School Days so interesting?

I keep on hearing about it here and from what I've read on it, it seems to be your typical love soap opera anime, but it has a major "twist"(read as predictable shocker used by several different things in the media that are just like it). Really, exaplin to me why this anime is so good.
I only ask because I don't want to waste my time watching it if it seriously looks as un-original as it sounds.
I didn't think it was that interesting, but I like yandere/yangire characters so I liked the last episode.
It just became popular because of the last episode. It surprised a lot of people who didn't know about the bad ends in the game... if you know about those endings then you should know how the anime ending is...

Really? All because of that "twist" it became popular? If I wanted stuff like that I would watch something more original, like Higurashi.

Funny you should mention it... I JUST finished watching it an hour ago. I thought it was the WORST p.o.s that I've seen. The main protag, Motoko, was the most hateful, despicable, back-stabbing person I've ever seen, and most of the other characters were varying shadows of the same "qualities". No conscience or redeeming values. I hated him more than any other villain, in fact. And I have a pretty high tolerance LOL
Don't waste your time with it, I would say. Despite what it says, there is no "love" story here, aside from one character, and this one ends up broken. Makoto has no heart. No soul. His reactions on hearing a girl likes him: his leering eyes go right to her boobs, his hands to her ass. That's where he's at :-(
I liked the main girls a lot and hated to see what happens to them, and some minor ones as well. But the only truly loving character ends up corrupted. It seems to celebrate bleak blackness. Just awful :nonono:
Comparing "harems" in extremes: On one hand, you have something classy, like True Tears. Then... you have this. :em04:

Hmm, I might watch it just to see this Makoto guy. I usually love villains (I.E.: Johann(#1 Villain of all time), Gendo, Hamdo(#2 Villain of all time) ). You catch my drift. Beyond that though I think I'll just write this off and not bother with it. Thanks for the warnings/advice.
I think this anime's greatness is it's originality.
Everyone seems to argue about the characters and the ending, because they expected a regular "love story" or "school life+romance" anime.
Instead they got this....
It's not bad, but if You too expect something like that, don't start watching it.

I guess originality can be aruged. But to me it sounds like a typical soap opera(I'm including the ending with this), and from previous comments doesn't seem like it's worth it.

I truly understand why Makoto is deemed the most pathetic male protagonist...
I wouldn't say it's a typical soap opera.
It was interesting to watch a "well depicted descent into madness". The characters emotions were portrayed perfectly. This why I like this series. It's much more realistic than any other school life anime.

Hmm, I guess I might watch based on what you say. Plus I simply love villains and there seems to be controvesey over this Makoto guy.
I'll look into it later.

Or you can simply say that he's a guy who cheats on his girlfriend and has sex with everyone else.
AdamLong
03-26-2008, 05:43 PM
I used to know a guy like that. He ws very...different I must say. I would never want to date someone like that, but he sounds like an interesting character, I suppose. I mean, is he always like that or what? Because now he's starting to sound like some lecherous idiot to me and not some truly cool villain like Johan, Friend or Hamdo.
No he's not a cool villain at all, just a lecherous idiot...
AdamLong
03-26-2008, 05:59 PM
Really?...Well, then I'm still debating on it.
Rnanaka
03-26-2008, 06:00 PM
Yeah, he dosen't even do it with kotonoha at all...
Kotonoha would be a nice girlfriend though..
Yeah, he dosen't do anything villan-like at all... Just yeah...

You'e so eloquent Ryo. >_>
So, is the other girl a tramp or?
Rnanaka
03-26-2008, 06:03 PM
I'm not really so eloquent... I'm just saying the truth... Just summarizing it into one sentence...
Oh yeah... just watch this...

Even if he doesn't do anything villan like he seems to be the antagonist of the show. At least from all the hate he's getting. I should probably judge it for myself though.
And what in the hell is up with that video?

Shows that School Days is Awesome.

I guess if they kill off a character everyone hates, heh.

Who needs to die is Makoto and Sekai, and the other girls who he did it with.

It was an interesting anime just BECAUSE the protagonist was so hateful. It was well written, well drawn and had the fairly interesting premise of taking your standard shy romance male protagonist and following his descent into depravity. He started off too shy to even talk to the girl he liked and then slowly becomes a depraved idiot. He's not a cool villan, certainly. Not everyone can enjoy watching a truly wretched protagonist, but hating him is what the writers were aiming for.
Personally I cheered at the ending because I was waiting for something like that to happen through the whole series, and everyone has an acquaintance like Makoto whom they've probably wished similar ends to.
And lazy... you probably should have put spoiler tags around that video, not everyone's seen it yet. :Þ

Oh, good Idea, thanks.
It really dosen't give anything away though...
AdamLong
03-26-2008, 06:43 PM
Hmm, thanks Toadvine. I think I've changed my mind and will actually watch it. Morely to see how the characterization works out then anything else. I guess I'm both too quick to judge and too quick to change my mind. >_>
God, I'm horrible.
Anyway, yeah, it kind of does give away the end Ryo. I mean, it just requires 1+1 thinking to get what is happening.

But thats not the end though....
And share your thoughts after you finish watching.
AdamLong
03-26-2008, 07:19 PM
Ahh...
Anyway, I will. I might not have time to watch it now though (although it seems pretty short). Going out with my lover for a few days. Road trips, free time because of no college, you know the deal. I'll be sure to comment on it after I finish however.

It's a great series because of the fact that it shows just how easy things can take a turn for the worse when everything seems so normal.
people don't hate Makoto for being a guy in a love triangle, but hate him for being a failure as a human being and an irresponsible asshole... When he wasn't cheating on another girl, he was too busy not completing a sentence. At one point, he couldn't even finish saying he's sorry. You hear, "Go" and that's it.
Rnanaka
03-26-2008, 07:42 PM
Love Triangle? It wasn't just Sekai...

The ending was just horrible
Rnanaka

Kotonoha was not an asshole.... she was just wanting to be with her girlfriend. Is something wrong with that?
Yeah, the ending was horrible, if Itou just hadn't died...

i was talking about makoto... he´s the asshole! and about kotonoha, she's driven insane by Makoto's indecisive attitudes and irresponsible actions.. i feel bad for her!
Rnanaka
03-26-2008, 09:27 PM
Yeah, I feel bad for her too... I want a girlfriend like that... T.T
xumbito
03-26-2008, 09:35 PM
kotonoha is pretty and friendly
:mlfy:
... but makoto is perverty and stupid!! and I was glad to see Sekai pwn that guy :071:
Rnanaka
03-26-2008, 09:39 PM
I was glad Sekai got killed too. Very happy. She should have died as much as Makoto should have.

03-26-2008, 09:46 PM
just one question...
Is it me or Makoto still hasnt slept with Kotonoha at all, since he already did sleep with everyone else
Makoto and Sekai gets what they deserves
Rnanaka
03-26-2008, 09:55 PM
No, he didn't sleep with her, in the Anime that is... Anyways, I've kinda said that twice on this thread... :P

Well, I'm up through episdoe 3 and so far it's actually okay.
I'm thinking a lot of problems which will eventually happen in the show can't entirely be blamed on that Makoto guy. It seems like outside forces, like those girls who pick on Kotohanono(sp?) are going to cause trouble. Already I'm not liking Makoto though. If he was my boyfriend I would have clobbered him by now >_>

While Makoto starts out as a typical confused, awkward student, once he gets "a taste" he makes his own decisions based purely on satisfying himself without any care about the other party. I thought it had a good start, but didn't like how the show seemed to glorify/reward him for his growing callousness, as if it's alright to be so. In that way, I'm glad that it turned out the way it did for him, but not the others, who made mistakes like a lot of us make wrt lovers. Makoto was just a dog, and became so due to his own self-centeredness :(

It really was at episode 4 that i really began to dislike matoko live everybody else, anime are supposed to do characters that seem realistic in a good way so you can relate to them and begin to like them, not the kind you just wanna punch in the face a few minutes after you met them. While im sad that Kotonoha snapped because of matoko fate, i was really happy that he got what he deserved

Really man the ending of this anime is just sick (in the most literal kind of way). If every woman that got left from a man snapped like that no one of us would be alive. I can "forgive" violence in an anime if it has a meaning being in it. But here? For a high school love affair? Thank god I just read the summary and watched the end on Youtube.

In the end Makoto died for being selfish and ignorant, which was exactly what he was from the beginning.
In any event, it's not bad enough that Makoto has been having his way with Sekai, and that Setsuna has tentatively joined in the race, and that Kotonoha has basically promised to let him do what he likes with her. No, that's not enough for our boy Makoto...
Drama... oh the drama...

So? If he was a womanizer did he deserved being stubbed multiple times to the death and then decapitated? Didn't all of the girls know that he was like that? The one helped him get his "dream" girl only to take him for herself.
Nevertheless an awful anime in my opinion
WARNING MAJOR SPOILER - ELFEN LIED
It's like in Elfen Lied Lucy/Miu simply snaps in the end slaughtering all of the main characters with the worst kind of way because let's say she saw Kohta kissing Yuka
Rnanaka
03-28-2008, 08:31 PM
Wait... lets refresh my memory.. Yuka was... who? Was it the cousin?
I don't remember them kissing.
Thank god I just read the summary and watched the end on Youtube.
This why You don't understand the reason behind their actions...
txcforever
03-29-2008, 03:29 PM
No I understand the reasons she had I just don't approve (if I can use this term) them as a reason for someone to commit murder and go insane. So he was a bastard that means we chop someone's head off? They made Makoto a real S.O.B just so we won't feel that bad when she butchers him at the end of the anime? Well maybe I'm softer that I thought because I still feel a knot in my stomach after that scene.
As for the Eflen Lied example it didn't happen I just made an assumption in that universe to make my point (even though when Miu was young she kinda killed Kohta's family for basically the same reason.
But Lucy isn't 'human' in the first place. She instinctively kills humans. In Sekai's and Kotonoha's case it's more complicated. And I think their actions are fitting their current state of mind.
Interesting game. xD
