View Full Version : Death to anime due to Licensed dubbing.

While the licensing of anime doesn't kill the anime itself... It's the horrible dubbing that comes with it... Do you know exactly how bad Lucky Star was butchered!!!~ KONA-CHAN DOESN'T SOUND LIKE KONA CHAN ANYMORE!! :nonono: =_( So what can we do to stop this virus from spreading onto future favorites... I say DEATH TO HORRIBLE VOICE ACTORS!

Well it easier for me to go dub to understand the anime, but I would rather have the orginal voice actor since the dubbing usually ruins the anime (that why I go to sub each time). I fire all the dub actors and replace them with good ones or none at all (I'm fine with sub).

for me the answer is simple....avoid everything with the 4kids logo if you can do that you got good anime ((Unfortunately the time frame it is aired also tends to effect what can be aired and not IE compare how Yu Yu was aired on Adult Swim compated to Toonami and compare Bleach to Naruto both dubbed by the same company))

I hate english dubbing (or in any other languag. Because in most of the times english-speaking actors don't take seriously the part given to them and ruin the character of the anime. In the best occasion (and I say that in the worst kind of way) especially in action animes all the characters sound like they came out from DBZ.

What can we do? Figure out how to make sure only voice actors that can show more than one emotion get hired. It's simple in theory, yet it doesn't happen...

And who force you to watch the dubbed version?
Not all Eng dub is bad and not all Japanese voice acting is good either.

Voice actors in Japan are what I consider real pros in other countries I just think they are jokes of what a real voice actor should be.It seems like Europe and America have yet to learn that lesson

One solution is to buy the DVDs of the anime you like so that you have the option of watching the original voice actors at work, or watching it with English dub so as to be able to fully enjoy the animation without your eyes bouncing up and down.
I've only found about 10% of dubbed anime to be as enjoyable as the original versions with subtitles. Cowboy Bebop probably had the best English cast that I've heard; it was near-perfect. But too mnay sound as if picked up from the Saturday morning cartoon brigade...

Cowboy Bebop is one. I think Ah! My Goddess (Both the OVA and the TV series) had really good dubs. The worse dubs I have heard thus far is Elfen Lied. Lucy sounded to...high pitch for her character.

well for example one piece dud is horrible, not to mention all the censoring they done on it. T_T It lost completely the anime feeling.
if you like anime then download subbed or dubbed by a fansubber groups because they aren't uncensored, don't watch the dubbed on tv, they censured too many scenes that ruins the animes

With out dubs, I don't think I'd watch much anime.
I think i'm the odd one out here, but I prefer my anime to be dubbed, I've yet to run into any dubing that I can't stand. The only voice actor that came close to bugging me was the voice of Tina form Ai Yori Aoshi. I think the English voice for Su form Love Hina was Awesome.
Sometimes I think I may be missing somthing, and somtimes I think they go to far. Basic terms like sempi for ex dont need to be changed or droped. Most Anime fans understand the basics.
But I don't want to spend my time reading the bottom of the screen, and Missing the little things that may be happening on screen. And god forbid the characters start talking really fast, and the subs start flyin by, Better have that pause button handy.
In the end I prefer to watch the Dub Version with subs turned on.
P.S. Hentai is a diffrent story, lol. I Don't think I've ever seen a good dub there, so I stick to the original audio and subs there. ROFL

Oh man, I heard the god knows (from haruhi) eng dub version... I had shivers going down my spine... I watched 10 seconds of it and I couldn't take it anymore so I turned it off and played the jap version...

I love subs since I found out about them and some shows left me in question on how come these lines are so cheezy so I found them in subs they sound so much better and original voices are perfect then the crappy dub. I do admit I still watch dubs but only if there good if not It automically cut off.

I cannot stand dubs at all... they disgrace so many things. I cannot stand how companies have the nerve to even dub songs which i find in the biggest insult to the animes they dub. How can you go about with your company taking the same song and getting an amateur to sing that song? For example, in Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, they took mostly all of the songs and dubbed them into english. Hirabayashi Kazuya, vocalist for Fine Lines (previously Husking Bee) had done such a great job singing Koyuki's parts. But then the dubbers decided to slap him in the face, take the songs that were written by and sung by the Japanese, and let an amateur like Greg Ayres to re-sing them because they cant stand the engrish accent that made the songs what they were. I see most dubbing as an insult to the original.
As for reading subs, ive gotten to a point where i can read subs so damn fast it doesnt bother me and i dont miss a thing from the anime / movie.

yeah i think sub is better, although we must split our concentration between the anime & sub. Because the original voices is so much better than dubs

You just have to watch it two times, first sub then then what happening. I myself can do both same time, but i know not everyone can concentrate on two ting the same time.
And when i said dub is bad i meant that they usually edit the anime together whit the dubing. Since stupid ppl who do it think only kids will watch them and thei should not see violence.
Bunch of hypocrites, you turn on the tv and what you see violence... and you cant stop them see it.
A kill only turn into violent monster if hes/her parents let him/her.
Blame all of it on animes, yeah i guess parents don't want to look bad. Sorry about the psychological ranting, but i cant stand the hypocritism what bring the heavy censoring and destroying of many great animes.

Well I tend to get Dual Audio dvds, I dont think I ever have gotten a Straight dub with out Japanese as a choice. I wouldnt have thought they would edit a dual audio version much, do they ? If so that will be somthing to think about. I am generally a noob when it comes to anime, I think my show count is only up to 71 series & ova.

I would have to agree with you on the dubbing of music, that never goes well. All tho I have seen dubed anime where they leave the music alone and just sub for that part of it. Thats the way I prefer it.

Ahh yes. Some dubs are okay. I liked the Samurai Champloo one, even though Jin's voice was a bit off. I guess swearing sounds better when you actually understand it yourself, not through subs lol.
But overall, dubs must die.
They killed Naruto =[
I personally actually like many modern anime dubs. Lots of the ones in the 90s were awful, but these days alot more effort is put into english dubbing. Of course, fans of the Japanese versions will still likely be irked at any noticeable changes, especially when the original plot-points, personalities, or dialogues are altered. It's one thing if the dub is truly awful with wooden, emotionless drones, but quite another if the characters just simply don't sound exactly like the Japanese version. I feel all voice actors have the right to interpret characters their own way, regardless of how it's been done before.
It's often just a matter of which version you watch first, and for most of us, the Japanese version just happens to have the advantage due to it being the country of origin for the anime we crave. Who knows, there's probably some communities of Japanese fans of American superhero cartoons that constantly bitch about how much Japanese dubbed versions of Batman sucks compared to the subbed English versions.

I will agree with most of you. I origionally started watching the dubbed version of Initial D then I got ahold of some of the episodes subbed... TokyoPop butchered everything in that anime. from the music and sound effects to voice acting. Changing the names of characters so Americans will like them should also be wrong.

dub sucks, to the point that some anime chickz sounded like a guy!
im not really bother with always reading the sub at the bottom, im kinda like used to it by now, i dont need to focus at all. (and btw, i also like fan sub better, rather some private company subbing it)

Licensed dubbing isn't really what's killing anime. It's more due to the fact that there isn't a good pool of voice actors for animes, especially since anime seems to looked at in a bad sort of way in the U.S. Perhaps once anime becomes more accepted as a legitimate industry, we'll see talented voice actors join the fray.

Why is it that you act like dubs are so bad? I've enjoyed all the dubs i've seen, and thought that the voice actors done a very good job on them. All you morons which claim that dubs are terrible obviously haven't seen many, perhaps only DBZ(whats wrong with it anyway?).

Right now, it's rather a toss-up really. Some animes have decent dubbing, some have god awful dubs.
I say give it some time and we'll see some fine talent in the future.

There is plenty of talent today. The voice actors do a great job of rendering a characters voice and making us believe they are alive. The only complaints people seem to have is with shows like Naruto or Bleach, but luckily no one cares about those shows, or the people that watch them.

I disagree, I see lots of animes with voice actors sounding like they'd rather be doing something else.
I take it you're a fan of Evangelion (judging by your name). I would say that anime has is a good example of horrible dubbing, especially Shinji's voice actor.

You do realise that the voice actor had to portray a whiney 14 year old boy, right? Not easy for a guy to do.

most dubbing is awful i meen god damn awful, take fma for istance ruined by one really bad voice dub ALPHonse! terrible, i meen really bad.
on the side of the story cowboy bebop was a masterful dubbing.
i feel that strongly about poor dubbing that i would probably not watch an anime, if it was badly dubbed because it would make me cringe. therefore i cannot watch it.

Well, it's time for me to enter the fray...
I generally watch anime subtitled. But really, I started that habit back when the actors really weren't that great (90's, generally speaking). Nowadays, I feel the actors have improved immensely and should be appreciated for their hard work and dedication to what's still considered a minor industry in America. But, not all anime should have English dubbing, though. I have excellent examples for both cases.
Example 1: AIR TV. AIR is a prime example of excellent English dubbing. I love AIR far more than any other anime I have EVER seen. When the English came out, I was afraid to watch it, assuming I would be disappointed. I watched it though, and I was very happy. The actress for Misuzu was excellent, and her emotions matched the character to a perfect "T".
Example 2: Kanon. Kanon is a special dating type anime, and has an excellent script. However, the key phrases that define some characters (Ayu's Uguu~), cannot be translated in English. The English dub for her character resulted in being bad because of that.

Lemme ask you guys something.
Have you seen the Anime in Subbed before you watch it Dubbed? Or you've seen 'em in Dubbed first?
Because I can't really say that Dub is killing Anime. It's just because if you get used the the Japanese Voice Acting watching prior to its U.S. release, watching it in Dub feels very different. It is as if the English voice acting does "SUCK", though it doesn't.
For example, Bleach. I know most people seen Bleach in Subbed, but when it came out in the U.S. it kinda felt like "It's alright, not that good but meh...". But if you're a first time viewer, it feels like a whole different situation.
INITIAL D dubbed, not that's a different Story. I really thought the voice acting sucked, and everybody agrees with me.

Once i strike it rich, I'll be buying all DVD's of series I like...so I can watch both the dubbed and subbed. I prefer subbed over dubbed by miles, but some people I know like to watch dubbed because it gives them something to laugh at. :5921f236: Doesn't make much sense to me, but it is true :-p. Dubbing here in the US is bad to horrible, save for some exceptions. I hate to say it, but disney make some good dubs, especially of Miyazaki's stuff (especially Howl's Castle). So I'm going DVD all the way, for the subs.

I dunno, for me, I feel some dubs are really good. You can't dispute the quality for some. But overall, I still side with subs and no dubs. Ascaris got a point, I mean I'm one who watches subbed anime. Over time you learn and pick up some phrases, and I mean you usually can guess what they're saying after some time. So, concentrating on two things at once is easier. Dubbing makes the whole thing easier, I admire the dubbers effort, but sometimes they just cannot be as expressive as the Japanese voice actors.:th_086_64color:

I don't think it's killing anything. People have the choice to watch it subbed, raw or dubbed. If you wanna watch something bad enough you'll find the version you want. Simple solution to not liking one of the versions, just don't watch it. I do believe Japanese voice actors are superior in quality but I sometimes enjoy a dub just as much as the subbed version of shows. Lucky Star is one where the dubbed just can't hold a candle to the original version, but there are great dubs out. I'll watch an anime either way, although I almost always look for subbed first. Miyazaki films are definately an exception where the dubbing is very well done.

I have to say I prefer subbed over dub because thats the way it was supposed to be the characters voices are supposed to sound the way it does and the quality in the voice acting is so much better.
