Girls and Videogames: What's the deal?

It's been bothering me for a while now that there's always some girl out there who dislikes or just isn't interested in getting involved with people who like videogames.

Or at the very least they seem to get "jealous" whenever their boyfriend is playing a game or two with friends.

Here's an example:

My friend and I are playing a fighting game, and his girlfriend calls him up just to say she's mad at him for not giving her enough attention...

Is that the videogame's fault? I dunno. Don't couples play together sometimes? Also, I find that "hardcore" gamers tend to be male as opposed to female...why is that?

I mean, I can understand there aren't many games that directly appeal to girls nowadays, although it has gotten better in recent years. But most girls I talk to tend to be more into Mario games or something less...well...engaging other than RPGs with cute bishounen in them (Final Fantasy for example).

I dunno, I'm just wondering what the take is on this for girls. Or maybe it's just a stereotype that people start believing if you say it enough times.

Where's the hardcore female gamer population around here? And do you mix gaming with relationships?

Truthfully I don't even consider a girl for any sort of relationship if she doesn't like videogames. I'm weird like that. :megane:

ok there is no dealing on someone who doesnt like video games you can try to teach that person who to play....but if she doesnt like it she doesnt like it, think about it like going shopping they love going shopping if they have money.....maybe you dont like doing that so its their private space man like video games girls like shopping thats all in it.

now the fact the complains about not giving her enough attention may be true..your friend goes nuts everytime a new game comes out and stays in his house like an hermit
or maybe he doesnt truly put enough attention at all OR she wants more attention wich can be the case too
but arent you blaming games to directly? just becase you where playing with him and she called and said "you arent putting enough attention to me" not " stop playing games and put attention to me" just you are getting into conclusions also they should have their private times too even to if they are in love.

I actually wonder about that sometimes too o.o.. like iuno ima Gamer so i never notice whats the problem.
But i guess if the guy plays way to much games and doesn't go out with his gf , then i wouldn't mind the gf being pissed cuz the guy is ignoring her .. but if the guy has been good and like talked to her alot and everything . i don't see the point of being so pissed @[Only registered and activated users can see links] they could just join them playing

I just think thats girls in general. Seriously, guys are more of an aggressive/competitive type. Girls aren't. Games are competitive and usually aggressive.

Honestly, it's up to the girl and how appealing the game is.

I'll use my little sister as an example. She hates most video games. She'll sit down and play some games(Halo, Disgaea, and Mario games-no idea why these are so popular among girls). While at the same time, she won't play any Final Fantasy, other FPS, or other games unless it's purely made for fun. In a sense the game's gotta be fun and not so challenging. Humor can help, as to say, doesn't make the game.

Just try this, if your gf or other girl in your life doesn't like games, try introducing them to a different type of game. The above pertained to my sister, they may or may not work. Play just for fun, not for keeps.

Gender stereotypes :( Girls can like the same games guys like and vice versa. It's just the preference of the "person" I'm a girl and I love most games. I mainly like RPG's or games with a story, as well as social games like MMO's.
People who don't like games are obviously not going to want to sit there and watch as there boyfriend ignores them however. Even a girl who does like games isn't go to want to sit there and watch you play solo. If you love someone and they don't play games, then when they are are around you spend time with them. Or find a game that might interest them and they will play with you. Maybe they aren't the right person to be with however. If your personalities and interests clash. You shouldn't be together :( Unless you are both willing to accept each others interests and compromise for each other

u getting my drift? most guys will always find something to occupy there time... something they can be addicted to.... something they will dedicate most of their life to... and a lot of girls will always bitch about this.. because they want attention, attention that the guy isn't giving them... attention that is focused on whatever they are addicted to...

but it's not ALWAYS like that.... if your chick is always bitching that you do TOO MUCH of something and don't spend enough time with her.. then there's one of two reasons for it... 1... she's a overbearing mental bitch who wants to control your life and wants u all to herself and u need to get rid of her.... or 2... u REALLY are spending TOO much time addicted to whatever u r doing, and u need to stop being a loser and spend more time with yo chick or dump her and cut off yo penis, cuz you won't need it anymore...

let me give u an example of a healthy relationship... bewteen somebody who loves video games and anime, and somebody who doesn't.... My ex. would call me all the time, and i'd talk to her while i was playing video games, she didn't mind at all, in fact she would tell me so... when she came over though... i would almost always stop whatever i was doing, and spend time with her... she would tell me "no.. u don't have to stop playing your video game, i can watch... i don't mind.... " but i would stop anyway... cuz i wanted to spend time with her too..... she didn't really like video games, and she only kinda like watching certain anime's... but eventually she wanted to play SOMETHING cuz she was curious.. so a friend lent her a gamecube, and i bought her a couple games that we both picked out.. i also lent her my gameboy... but whenever we spent time together, we would do OTHER Stuff... like go to the movies, out to eat, bowling, bar hopping, and go to conerts.... She NEVER bitched about me playing to much video games, and i never complained about spending time with her... what is this fancy NEW strategy u say? it's called compromise...

so in short.. if any person doesn't want problems, they need to find somebody that isn't a bitch/loser, and they need to learn to manage their time better so they get sufficient time with your significant other and sufficient time playing video games or whatever hobby they are addicted too...

Heh, you'd be surprised how many girls play MMOs, it was about 30% last time they measured. Besides girls usually play games like Sims, tycoons… And girls which play FPS tend to be weird & violent (ONE OF THEM FREKING BIT ME!!)

The majority of the gaming community is in fact, girls.

Boys just tend to make the most ruckus, whereas girls have been playing for years and (at least my friends and me) tend to be very low profile.

I nearly don't socialize in games unless it's WOW or GuildWars.

Part of it is the stereotype of the gamer nerd that has no life away from their system (as depicted in the WoW episode of South Park), and most non-gamers want nothing to do with somebody like that.

Secondly, it's the fact that video games are yet one more thing to compete for their "man"s attention/devotion, and given the prevalence of sex (or at least hot female bodies) in video games, that's just a losing battle.

My best friend that is a girl seriously hates video games, she said she rather gossip than play games, then there's this other best friend (girl as well) who kind of plays video games, but loves to play basketball, but that first friend doesnt like to play video games, or sports, but she is very good at mock trial and speech as she went to national tournament twice in a row

i'm sorry.. all kidding aside, i do believe there are a good amount of girls that play video games, but it's nothing compared to the mass quantities of guys that play video games... if i had to put a number to it, i'd say overall for every 15 guys, theres 1 girl that plays video games, and for every 40 guys that play mmo''s theres 1 girl... this is all speculation though... and imo... but i've been playing games since i could remember, and i especially love on-line ones... and this is pretty much what i've concluded...

and as far as staying on topic, i do also believe that its not the video games fault it's either the guy or the girls, as explained in my previous post..

again, sorry if i seem like a douche, but it's just my opinion...

i'ma hardcore gamer.. (one of those that go lol and aggro =P ) and i don't know many female gamers that do game... but i knew one online once... she had a life and all but sometimes she came on just to talk to me (interesting? i thought so to..) she played all the games i played and just as much (i looked at her xfire) of course most females love mmo's tho i.e it be wow or uo or eq... they love em but they are never as hardcore as males... guys like me like to kill things and see things die so we're more into shooting stuff and blowing stuff up other than planning something out and waiting for a spell to finish... my personal take on it... if i don't see something die in atleast 3 days i start having withdrawls and want to play some fps's or somethin...

I've known quite a bunch of female gamers, some rather hardcore at that, so it's never been a real concern for me. Though it was amusing that on the GameFAQs poll of "Why do you play as a female character in a MMORPG?", only 4% responded "because I am female".

I guess it does have a lot to do about attention problems, since some gamers can be lead to totally ignore all social functions for days upon weeks when that new game they really wanted finally arrives.

While I don't watch soap operas, I do enjoy some shojo like Angel Sanctuary as much as shonen, and I know quite a few girls who play hardcore games like competitive SNK fighters far more than I do. I guess the stereotypes are just part of mainstream culture.

Seriously now, since games started getting casual (WoW, Sims, Wii, DS) more and more girls/women start playing video games. But still the number of girls/women that get burnt playing video games all day doesn't even compare to the number of burnt guys. Most of them will play a little Singstar with their friends (we MEN only play Guitat Hero :31056:), maybe a little Dance Dance Revolution (hmm maybe not), when they are alone a little WoW or Sims and after/before that go out with their friends. Men on the other hand are more likely to ditch friends and girlfriends for one more hour of their favorite game.

I play Nostale and I've found that while most of the female characters in there are actually guys behind them. Lots of females play too. As far as I know, unless they are guys pretending to be chicks which is just fucking weird.

well i really dont find any reason of why there should be a problem with female gamers. i actually encourage girls to play more. Some of my old girlfriends actually started playing games with me, and liked them ^^.
