This is directed at people who started playing games before the age of 10, and now are at least 18. Anyone can post, but I'd like input from people with at least 4 console gens under their belt (you don't actually have to own 4 generations of consoles)

I played a lot of games as a kid. Now in college I have more free time (CS majoring is easy at my school) but I play less games. Looking at the library of games I have (well my family has for the first few gens) the number seems to go down a lot with each generation.
I still play games a lot (Rock Band at least once a week for 4 hours with floor mates)
but I don't play a wide variety of games. Guitar Hero, Rock Band, SSBM.

I don't know if this is due to me not being able to afford a lot of new games, or me just not liking all the games that are coming out these days (how many FPS games do I need for the 360?)
Maybe it will get better in a year or so (I plan on getting a Wii down the road for gun-rail games, Galaxy, and TP)

So my questions:
Does it seem like you have fewer games than previous generations? (assuming you buy stuff)
Do you still play the same amount, but with the said limited selection? (if you do have the limited selection)

I'm actually probably buying just as many games as I always have been. I'm 20 now and have been gaming since I was around 4, since then it's always been a big passion and quite an investment.. I do think I play the same amount too, usually a few hours a day if I get the chance.

Is the quality the same? Eh, not in replayability. I still think the SNES is my favorite system and I can always go back to it along with the NES, Genesis, and just have a blast with them.

I think a factor is that when you get older you just have more things to do. At this age we've got to worry about life ahead, work for some, college for some, etc and it kind of takes away some game time. If that makes sense?

My thoughts I guess.

Back in the NES and n64 days the game dev's actually had to make a good story line to keep people playing and keep the games selling. Now a days it's just lets make the game look sexy and spend 5 million promoting it and that works....But as for the buying less games, Well there's so many random games that come out now a days, (like the atari and nes days) But back then the good games sold much better then now cause well they had great story lines and were entertaining (go look at game sales from older games in a year, Then go look at a game now it's sales in a year) But yea enough random mumbling cause I don't think it's making sense, All I care for now is a good multiplayer game that will keep me busy and the odd rpg...

(And what are you talking about? Yea the 360 has alot of FPS games, But there are still a good bunch of RPG games out there for it)

Yeah, I don't think there's a lot of pride in developers like there used to be a few gaming generations ago. Seems like nowadays companies just want money, money, money.

I started playing when i was 3 or 4 starting with super nintendo, sega genesis and n64. Back then doom for pc was also fun. I remeber playing it with my friends because i was too scared to play alone... I still do play probably because im addicted to it and i can't stop playing games anymore... I play the recent ones such as FEAR and some old school ones like cs and starcraft.

Well began playing like around 6-7 and I had played nintendo, super nintendo, sega genesis, n64, playstation, etc. But I have to say that have kinda out grew it by now, due to less money spent on them lol. But orginally I played games since it was fun and a lot safer than playing in the street were gangs usually hang out (lived in the bad neighborhood in LA). I still play games once and awhile but it hasn't taken over my life like the old good day:JFBQ00213070516A:

Yup I have found that I have less games for the new gen systems then the old ones and I would have to agree that the selection of games are a lot more limited in their creativity. I'm in collage so playing has been limited but when I do I go all out playing.

Yeah as a college student the amount of video games I am able to purchase now is very limited. But I don't think their are that many good games out like there used to be. As if all of that is not enough everyone in my dorm only plays Madden or Halo. So I am pretty much alone.

I heard mixed reactions to Mass Effect, I know Oblivion is kick ass, and that Eternal Sonata was bad
those are the only RPGs i know of on the 360

Lost Odyssey is supposed to be a great classic styled JRPG, for the 360.

I tend not to buy as many games as i did a few years ago, more of the games nowadays seem to be shorter than before. I'll go out an hire a game and play it and from that ill see if the longtivity will really justify buying it. i mean if i can hire it 2 or 3 times and complete it its probably not really worth buying. If its a good game and can last me a while ill buy it.

As for game time i play a bit less now, but when i play ill play for a long amount of time. But recently I've found that I'm going back to older games in my game library and enjoying them more than the newest thing to hit the shelves.

I've been playing for 22 years now (damn i feel old:1:) and i buy more or less the same amount of games, although i've always been selective with what i get, buy what i like and rent the rest (god bless blockbuster:monk:) and i found that there is a lot of trash out for sale that gets a lot of promotion, and some games that aren't, are better, so it's harder to find this few good games than it was 5 or 10 years ago (what did i just said:em0129:)

it could also be that you have found your style of games and you dont want to try other things (that happened to a lot of my friends :P)

Actually a few of my friends at school have Mass Effect.
One of them really like it, another thought it was okay, and another thought it was trash compared to the KotOR games
I'm going to get it eventually, I just don't want to pay $60 for it
Actually, I'd be more inclined to buy others, like Eternal Sonata or Bioshock (i've played it already though) once they are cheaper as well.
I'll look into Eternal Sonata and Two Worlds some, perhaps playing the demos of them, maybe Enchanted Arms

I haven't bought nearly as many games as I used to. I've bought a lot of other stuff in the past 2 years that costs a lot of money so I haven't had much to spare. Also lately I've been doing more emulation than normal console stuff. I've acquired a pretty good sized ROM library though.

The gaming industry has changed alot throughout the years, and it seems to be moving in the direction of power, seems that alot of these games dwell on pretty graphics rather than award winning gameplay with a few exceptions to some brialliant games that have been released such as Mass Effect and F.E.A.R, how many of you remember the true classics such as Lunar Lander and the original donkey kong or even the first monkey island on dos, and example of graphics vs gameplay is the elder scrolls series, i remember that i played morrowind for years, in fact i loved the gameplay of it. then oblivion was announced, i was so happy, however once released i was slightly disappointed by bestheda sacrificing the brialliant gameplay they created for morrowind with spiced up graphics, don't get me wrong i enjoyed oblivion but it didn't hold my attention as morrowind did. i think the point i'm trying to make is don't forget the classics because in all honesty some of them were probably some of the best gaming experiences of your life.

now that i have my own income, i find that i have more games in my library. unlike back then, i was dependent on mom and pop for games. now that i make my own money, i can buy at my discretion. as for playing, my time has def. been cut back. i can only usually play late at night when everything is done and taken care of for an hour at most. on the weekends and vacation is when i try to make for lost time :]

Our standards are just getting higher, unfortunately.

Honestly, there's a lot of good games out today that get totally trashed by people's super high expectations and for some reason, the games with the most recognition are really lackluster.

Saint's Row 2, in my opinion, offered hours upon hours more than what Grand Theft Auto 4 could hope or dream to offer. Better story, better gameplay, more customization, more DLC, better online content. Yet for some reason GTA4 was toted as one of the best games ever made.

The same can be said with Dawn of War 2 versus Halo Wars, Metal Gear Solid 4 versus Splinter Cell Double Agent or Chaos Theory, any Square Enix RPG in the last 2 years versus Lost Odyssey, etc.

Nowadays, all editorials are doing is taking the highest bidder. Oh Rockstar bonuses the most? Well GTA is the best open world crime game ever. Oh Bungie made Halo Wars? It's a 9/10 as an RTS, Dawn of War? What's that?

That and World of Warcraft tore the console economy to shreds. Millions of people are playing that atrocious pile of life-sucking coding instead of playing console games.

Owned a snes since I was four. Back then, when I was given a simple game like donkey kong or Pac-Man adventures I was thrilled and occupied in the game for several weeks. Now, even the most advanced games for the Ps3 don't appeal to me in the same sense for over 3 days at the most (except probably when Starcraft II is released). So I'm not really into gsming anymore but lately some visual novels seemed interesting to me.

i agree /w most of the ppl around here...

i'm 24 yrs old, and i was playing since the NES days and I don't play nearly as much as before. Not because I don't have time to play, but because I just don't find games these days that interesting. And I don't think it's because i have grown out of it either, i actually still replay old games /w friends often on SNES emulators.

like some of you said, how many FPS games do we need for 360?
also, developers focus too much on graphics, when gameplay is what matters most... the gaming industry needs to come up /w something new, or else they will lose a marketshare to old timers like us who grew up /w the NES and SNES...

good topic post btw ^^

Well, I started playing video games when I was so young (about 6 or 7) consoles so I don't remember the name of, then I played SEGA then to PS and stopped for 6 or 7 years (when I was about 11 till 18) then I started playing Final Fantasy XII and continued to,, and I'm playing PS3 and some PC games currently... But now I cannot get myself to play as much as I used to,, games don't feel fun anymore,, maybe cuz I'm living in a new environment or something but thats how I feel

Aged 20 now, first started playing when i was around 8, Heroes of Might and Magic has alot to answer for. :D

I think Ive had near enough every console under the sun (and still have most of them), and when I think back over it all the one thing that comes to mind is the RPG's.
Most of my longing memories of gaming came from RPG genre gaming, because they had massive replyability and each playthrough took at least 50 hours. You could never get that much gaming from a FPS game. Granted the online FPS market is the most common thing in gaming now but I just can never really get into any.

Now the thing is modern day RPG's are absolutly poor compared to any of the originals and im not just talking FF7 here, stuff like Shadow Hearts, LoD and Vagrant Story, they are not all mainstream and never were but Ive had easily more than triple the hours on any one of them games compared to anything I have for my 360. The modern RPG's are gettin completly slated by graphics and they never concentrate on what they should be, story.

Gunna start making things quick now because im sure textwall is gunna make people happy.

Modern day games are always too easy, completed Halo 2 on legendary mode and returned it to the shop within a week, yet I still have been unable to complete Doom on nightmare mode. Taking away the 'health bar' from FPS games has ruined all challenge they could have.

Looking at my shelf I see I have twice as many PS1 games than I do 360 games, and three times as many PC games than I have anything else and nearly all my PC games are from before 2002, NWN, Baldurs Gate, Arcanum, Half-life1 and STARCRAFT :D

textwall end,
have a good day! much love,
-Rags

I'm already 26 this year, and I've started playing since I was small (don't remember when really) but it was during FF 5 (which was know as FF 2 in the US edition) or was it even before that.

Yeah, now that I'm working I can get more games to my liking but with less time to play it, the games keep on piling up, that and I love RPGs, so :071:. I only get to play during the night and weekends, which is not much especially taking off days you are exhausted from work.

Still wondering should I get a 360 or not, since I already have a PS3 and Wii console.

Ahhh the joys of nightshiftin <3

I never really said how much I play now compared to then, I suppose I play more now, but im always playing old games rather than new ones.
Whenever I do get a new game, as in get on day of release new, I always play that for awhile before inevatably going back to some of the old classics. Sometimes only takes 4~5 days before im back on Starcraft :D

ive been playin games since i was 3 (im 21 now) playin the original mario and Castlevania 3. personally i buy more games than i did back then just due to me actually having my own money to spend. at the same time, i hate the majority of the new games comin out. i hate fps games, and i really don't think we need a new generic fps about the same generic spae marine all the time. seriously. it was ok for quake, but after that its like every game is about some dude in space shotin stuff in an all brown setting.

i try to play all genres, but there's some that just aren't as fun to me. i think the casual wave of games has really hurt games since theres nowhere near as many good games around. developers mainly just stay with what will sell. i think the main reason i don't buy games as much as i did compared to even a few years ago is just because games today are way too similar. plus im getting tired of $60 games that only take 8 hours to finish. but there's still games like Disgaea that go out of the way to give literally hundreds of hours of playtime without even finishing the game.

i think i'm probly just bitter about how easy and pointless games got over time though.

1. Well...I never had that many games during the years which I played the MSX, NES and SNES. ~20 for each system. For the PSX, I bought many games (over 300). Of course, 99% were pirated copies so they were cheap, heh. I have around the same amount for my PS2 (mostly pirated copies, again). Not as much for the current gen but that's probably because I don't have access to the games.

2. Yeah, I play a lot. Video games are a major part of my life.

I started on the SNES, I don't recall how old I was exactly. But I've played since my family brought the console into the house one year. I remember having tons of games for it. In fact, the one I remember most clearly was Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. Since then I've gone through all the Sega Consoles (<3 GameGear!), Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox. No, I've never touch an Atari or any of the orginals like it.

I difinently play less now than then. School plus work take most of my time. Most of my friends aren't nearly as hardcore of a gamer as I am, so if I'm with them I'm not playing either, usually. I probably spend more money on games now then before because now I buy my own where as to before I asked my parents. I think I have less now, though. When it comes down to will I buy the new Resident Evil 5 and eat raman all week or eat better, I tend to lean towards to healthier eating. Keyword there being "tends."

I have to agree with those who said peoples expectations have gotten out've hand for new games. Some people feel it has to be some huge block buster hit for the game to be good. If it doesn't have a 32 million dollor budget it isn't worth their time. If more people played a game for what it is and stop comparing it to the years biggest and greatest games I think people would find gaming much more enjoyable.

Just in this thread someone compared Mass Effect to KoTOR? That is an irritating comparison. The two games are nothing alike aside from their futuristic setting/genre. Oh, wait, they both have a turn based combat system, clearly they must be compared as they are both just copying each other, right? To top it off, and correct me if I'm wrong, wasn't KoTOR released for Xbox? It's even more silly to compare it to a game that was released for 360.

It's that kind've mentality that ruins games for people. Luckily for those of us who could careless, we end up with large gaming libraries and many happy hours invested into those game.

The old days..

At 5 I started gaming, only through Nintendo...the best entertainment system there is...the NES...though I couldn't finish a lot of games

At 7-9 the family had a PSOne and I got grips with Ace Combat 3: Electrosphere..it didn't make much sense since its the Japanese version, but its OK...

At 9-11 The First time playing a PC, all I wanted to play was Office Time Killers but I eventually found Duke Nukem on my dad's comp.....srsly, WTH!?!? BTW, that computer was just 2 GB...

At 11-14 Upgrades at last!! I have a 30GB PC, now I can play some games I couldn't play before like Quake III, Freelancer, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and others...

At 15 I got a PS2, mostly bought Fighting games with me and I WAS NEVER DISAPPOINTED WITH MY DECISIONS!!

At 15-16 The PS2 sank and the PC busted, the PC blew up on me and it was beyond repair...planned on getting a powerful PC and I have 1 now...after just going to internet cafes and play bad games there..

To the official post: I've bought less games for the newer generation consoles than I have for the older generation ones over all time, but I currently own more for the new gen console... Mostly because people want to borrow my Genesis games and end up losing them or they break, etc, as an example...

Unlike the new generation games though, I do at times, without reason, randomly want to play some old atari game or regular nintendo game... And unlike most cravings, those cravings can not be satiated...

That is, unless you are a total freakazoid and will end up single alone and in misery.
