Yes, i know how to swim.

And everyone knows HOW to drown. But I doubt there a many people, if any at all, that can make themselves drown voluntarily without somehow being forced. For example, being held under, binding your hands and feet and weighing yourself down or simply going so deep you won't make it back up in time.
Self-preservation instinct won't let you do it.

Plus, until you lose consciousness, oxygen deprivation hurts ... like hell.

That reminds me of something i've been wondering about. In anime there's often some stock character that can't swim. In Japan, is there any basis for this stereotype?
I could just look that up, but I'm feeling lazy, so ...

ANYWAY... I trained as an-up-and-coming Olympic swimmer for years. In fact, it was both the goal of my coach (who was an immigrated Red Chinese former Olympic trainee) and my goal was to get me into the Olympics by the time I was 14-16. She said I had perfect Breaststroke and Freestyle, near-perfect Backstroke, but I needed to work on my Butterfly (I didn't really like that one <_<). I always set new pool records all over the Pacific Northwest as fastest swimmer in my age group.

My coach was going to submit the paperwork to recommend me to Stanford University (since they only accept recommendations) after a few years of polishing my technique to her satisfaction. And because I asked her to, she also would have taught me the Chinese language too. I would drive her so mad sometimes. LOL "He think he on vacation!" she would tell my mother. I had perfect technique, but I usually executed it pretty lazily, going at a comfortable pace rather than pushing myself to shave off time. She was very kind though.

But... after the competition at a swim meet in Klamath Falls, Oregon, she and her husband with their 5 year old son were driving home in a car when they were killed by a drunk driver in a truck. They were slammed into, both vehicles went off the road, and crashed into a tree. The little car exploded but the truck didn't (I think). All four were killed.

In honor of her memory, I remember that one night all the families of everyone on the swim team bringing little candles, lit them and put them on what were like synthetic lilies and floated them in the pool. There was no other lighting and it was very beautiful, seeing all the flickering lights on the water. Some of us were crying softly. I was closest to her, but didn't cry until days later because I was still in shock. She was such a sweet, kind lady.

She was my friend. :em019:

Drink drivers sucks. I Always wondered why they didnt have the common sense not to drink and drive...!! If they dont bring tragedy to themselves, its tragedy to others dammit!

Sry, i had a close shave with a drunk driver once and the stupid mothe******* didnt even seem repentant abt it!!

Back to the topic though, i cant swim. Im fine above water, but once i go under i just go crazy...

i swim, well used to...
i used to swim quiet a lot, until i was about 11 (practiced in tornaments... and sometimes even won :) ).
kept that as a hobby, but i had an injury in the age of 15 and now i can hardly swim , i try, but it is difficult.

i had one experiance of near drowning (which means i know how to drown i believe? :) ) and iso i guess ive had it all :)

The human body floats on its own. Completely fill your lungs with air, hold it, and relax with your face, stomach, and chest above the water. Let your arms and legs just hang weightlessly or lethargically tread with them. Slowly let the air out of your lungs, but when you get to a certain point, your body will sink a little. When the water starts covering your face, inhale again. You'll have to estimate how much air you should keep in your lungs at any given time to stay afloat, and it shouldn't take long to get the hang of it. ;)

I guess I know the basics for swimming, I can do it if needed but I have to close my eyes very tightly which defeats the purpose of swimming where you want to right? Not even goggles can help me hehe I guess just looking down at the pool floor or the beach just does something weird to my head and then it's instant drowning..lifeguard anyone? ;)

I dunno how to swim and maybe i wont forever coz i just dont like water ( not saying that im like a cat or whatever) and for the second question, I think it's not too much to say that people are BORN to drown and because people do drown that's why they learn to swim. Am i not? So, i think it's an obvious answer ^_^'

Well, I was told once that I "swim like a rock"... Guess that answers the question, ne? I got better since then (it was like 10 years back) because I really love to be in water, but I'm still not that good.

The worst part is probably due to the fact my eyes are so sensitive I can't open them in ANY kind of water if I want to be able to open them at all the next day...

I know how to swim, but in practice I fail and drown.
Kinda why the Swimming Sports at school was both one of the best and worst days at school, everyone loved to see a socially uninvolved person like me swim, but I was embarrassed I was so bad.

Can't really swim especially when I was a kid. I was in not so deep water in the beach with my cousin but then the tide started to bigger it was too late to be able to get back to shore the water gotten bigger. So I did what good person would do if your family member is also in danger I climb on top of that motherfucker on his shoulders to save myself. Thanfully my dad came to the rescue, not sure why my cousin was mad at me...
