I need a bit of your time and help, I'm doing some research for a case study for my BA and was wondering if you could answer this questionnaire for me:E88WFG: ONEGAAAAIII, If you have anything to add feel free to do so (I mean your opinions and stuff) and I'll also make a poll and ask you to please vote it so i can easily set a percentage of how many of you prefer the fan-made translations to the official ones
As for the country/continent Q I hope you can answer it because I would love to know the differences between regions about this subject.

Yape...I think it did change
as you said...the censorship, the language and cultural..
the other day I was reading a manga (new releasing one) and I see that the translations was based on slang American's language..
it was l kinda like a puzzle and all I was thinking (what those with a not fully english language understanding will do ??)

Depends on the translator but 4 in general I guess

Short answer Fan made.
Long answer.... Well, really most of my hatred of the official translations comes from years back when they flipped pages and edited out things they thought Americans wouldn't "get" >.< But, I think a lot of them still try to edit cultural things to fit America rather than really explain to you what's going on. Fan translations tend to try to stay true to the original manga.
Another problem I have with it is that the translating companies (especially tokyopop) drop series really easy. they publish the first few volumes of a manga and then just stop. There are so many series that never get finished.
Though I do have my qualms about fan translations too... it all depends on the translator. If the translator doesn't know enough of the original language to really understand what's going on you end up with really weird translations.
I also hate it when fan translators put their own comments onto the pages. If it isn't something that explains something cultural don't add extra text to it!

I think it's really good to translate the cultural elements directly and explain them. When you try to cut out the cultural aspects of something it tends to make it not make any sense

Very long time.... gah... about 12 years now I guess.

I don't know about fan translations over the years.... but definitely the official ones have changed.
I remember back when they first started publishing them in America they would flip the pages, cut out cultural aspects, rename the characters with "American" names, censor things they could be considered even mildly racy because "comics are for kids".... ugh I hated it.
While I still don't particularly like what some of the official translators do, they have gotten much much better at being true to the original work.

Hum, I haven't read some official ones lately, but I'd say 4. (:

I'd say a 4, though sometimes for some fan-made ones they aren't as high quality as others. A lot of the times it's because they are first starting out! Still, fan-made ones are pretty awesome!

Honestly, I am okay with both versions. However, if the translation quality is lacking terribly (which isn't usually the case), I would prefer the official version seeing as there aren't as many mistakes and I could understand it better that way. Although...I do like that in fan-made they explain the cultural stuff. So, still, I'd be glad just to get a translation. I'm grateful to both. :D

Definitely need the cultural elements. It's not the same without them because then it's hard to follow the flow of the story, especially if the story is based on a custom or something like that.

I feel that for the times I've been reading these translations, there hasn't been much that changed. I see in fan-made translations more cultural elements being translated and explained than in official translations though!

Reason, i usually read anything that has a great plot and art. Normally i look out for something captivating, that will surprise me, has a very good plot and character development, keeping me in front of the screen reading.
But, lately i've been more into yaoi because of the variety of artwork i stumbled upon :P.

I like both, but i read more fan-made, so i can't really see the big differences between them. I focus more on the fan-made since it's easier to get it and don't have to wait a lot :P

As i already state it, i like both, but don't see the difference yet, still i use more fan-made translations, i get them faster and i do have some prefered groups which i always "watch over" for new updates :)

I believe it is a great idea, this way i could learn more about thier tradistions/life style/locations/way of thinking and discover a new passion. It's true that everything has a greater meaning in the original version, but since the language is a problem i'm just happy and thankful to those who do such a remarcable job as scanning groups.

Only once, from spanish to english, but never from japanese since i don't know it v.v. But i'd do it if i knew japanese.

Some yes some none. But i believe it also depends on the manga itself, how it was written and drawn. Sincerly i never paid attention to this things so much, but i realise that it's harder to get the mangas we want and the scanning groups have it tough as well.

It's relative, because the fanmade translation are more near the original work... but some scanlators don't pay attention enough to typing and reviewing errors, names and words.
The Oficial is more correct and have no language errors, but some limitations make the mangas less enjoyable, like regional terms and censorship.

I think these types os translations are able to be done, but always respectiong the originality. The readers wants to be nearest possible to the original or the reality of the games/food/places/customs, etc that they like.

I usually go for both... i like to start off with Fan Trans, and if I like the Manga i usually go look for it in a store... if i cant find it in the store I just continue on with the Fan Trans. Buying things online is too much of a hassle.

I love how they usually keep it in. It teaches you about the culture and sometimes the language of the Japanese. I really like it.

I find that so far they havent changed that much... slight differences here and there, but none thats worth mentioning. However with this new ban that they are thinking of, we can expect to see the quality of Manga and Anime go right down the drain... I'm quite surprised that the ban didnt affect music as well... some of the stuff out there these days... sheesh...

Like I said in the question number 3 in my country if the publishing company is crappy we have work like that (censor, crappy cleaning...) ^^" and generally the vocabulary is old fashioned, there are mistakes, it's like they never read the work again to check the mistakes.
The sentence they use are cheesy, they ruin the story.
That's why the fan made is the best for me.

I love it, actually I think it gives an originality and it's traditional...I like learning new things, history, culture, food everything.

Actually at first and I remember it.... I TOTALLY HATED it...I hated manga, I was thinking that what's the point of reading stuff like that, in black and white......it's stupid but I thought that and one day ( a year after) a friend lent me a manga hanakimi and I loved it since then I started to read more ^^
so I like manga for 6 years, I started in high school.

About the fan-made I can't tell, not that much by me but since english isn't my native language I can't really see the difference.
About official, in my country I think it's getting better, they are adapting the vocabulary, they make efforts for the huge series (naruto, bleach) the cleaning is good, the censor depends on the publishing company.

Both translations are pretty good for what I've seen (I don't buy much mangas anyway), for the fan scanlations depends on the group...

Food and customs should be left as they are, and I like to see honorifics left if the manga's setting is japanese or oriental. Otherwise it would be awkward to see an english/american/italian/whatever person use -kun, -san, etc

Fan.made is becoming better, haven't seen many improvements on official paper-releases (changes have otherwise affected tv animes and videogames, but not mangas)

I don't prefer neiter nor of the translations but I think that official transl.
are sometimes more informative and can capture better the language
differences between the cultures and meanings of the sentances
that can't be directly translated as word to word.

I like it. I think it's only good to have that info with the text too.

Depends on the particular manga... :/
There are scanlations that are translated by ppl who don't know enough the language they translate from or into, and the story can become total meaningless. But that's happened with official releases too.. :/ On the otherhand the fan-translators give their hearts into it. :D Though they can be biased..x_X

Often you have to know some cultural elements to understand better the story, a scene, the characters' relations or just a joke, so I think it's an important part of every manga and should be translated, and explained in footnote where it's needed.

Fan-made. Sometimes in the comic the character will say something in Japanese and the fan-made will help you out with the translation. Sometimes the when said its cool or funny but after its translated and the english word is used instead of Kanji its no longer funny or cool.

Some of the fan-made manga and anime have gotten a little more sloppy in means of translation. I don't know what is being said sometimes because the English is so bad. Censorship is almost non-existent anymore. Sometimes there are those manga anime that censor almost everything above the knee and below the neck, but I haven't seen one in years.

It depends. If the manga is of new-release, I would go for fan-made due to the reasons above. However, sometimes it is not enough just to get the fan-made ones (for the reason of being completely addicted) so I would also buy the official ones, GIVEN that I trust the official translator.

For fan-made translations, nothing has changed that much, except they gradually get better overtime. For official translations, there is a large spawn of really (I mean really) accurate translation companies, and this has huge impact on manga-followers who have closely following the fan-made translations. (They can get physical copies of their beloved manga now!)

Fan-made, because you can find more informations about certain words, and compared to official translations they aren't trying to force the whole text to be fully translated and changed for the readers from that country to understand. I find it entertaining to learn new words and lots of infos about them while reading a manga.

Forcing a translation on cultural terms is like stealing from its charm and stealing from the reader's knowledge. I'm not saying that a translation should be 50% asian language and 50% english for example, but there are certain terms that are putting the whole text and the whole atmosphere of the story into a certain harmony that expresses the mangaka's thoughts and feelings and that is vital to be understood for the sake of both reader and story.

in my opinion, its far better if we dont translate such things because these things show how unique each culture are.. aside from that there are words with no exact equivalence in english nor in some other language, so if we are going to tyranslate it.. the meaning/essence of the sentence will slightly change.. it will e better if you put an asterisk to the word/or sentence then have a short defenition at the bottom of the page

I prefer fan made because not only is it free, they are often uncensored, easy to find, and fans will translate series that official companies won't due to subject matter (especially when it comes to yaoi which is very difficult to find anywhere besides online). Also, many fan translators will add bonus stuff like colored pages which officials don't. Only downside is waiting a while for another chapter and not always having the complete story there at once.

I think that it makes the comic more authentic and I like reading a comic as it was meant to be read. I also enjoy learning about Asian culture through what I read, so I think it is very important to keep these elements. I especially like when translators put in translation notes explaining certain cultural elements, such as White Day.

Because they leave-off honorifics and that's misleading. They change the dialog and it comes off sounding really lame

Official translations don't have that. A lot of times they take it out and change the dialog. I noticed I enjoy it more when it's fan made . The only draw back is ...it might not be accurate

I think it should be preserved...all of it. It's a diffrent culture than ours. I see no reason to change the references and the humor and even the puns. Yes I think they have improved a great deal. They put in asterisks and give you more info when earlier translations left a lot of the culture references and explanations about the language itself out. The translations seem to be more accurate and I find that a lot of them have come close to the official translations

My preference of fan or official is usually set to both. There are some fan translations that I simply cannot read because of the lack of proper English. In official translations, some fairly important dialogue/items loses their integrity because the companies felt it wouldn't have been worth it to explain it to make sense to us...and thus, replaced them with something far more familiar to us. In both cases, I cannot focus on the actual story anymore because the grammar and/or bonds, etc is lost in the translation.

I feel that the cultural elements should be left as is, in keeping with the integrity of the story's plot. The way people are addressed, for example, portrays the closeness of the characters involved in Asian cultures. I can't say for sure about fan translations, since I've only recently become more observant in the way it's done. However, for official translations, I can definitely say that it has changed. In the first few years after I had become a fan and buying Asian comics, almost all hints to the Asian cultures and the integrity of the name usages were almost nonexistent. However, publishing companies have, recently, begun to embrace the Asian cultures and languages of the original comic and kept them in a number of their published works with brief explanations in translation notes, if necessary.
