None of the members in the forum use there real name as there ID. Why is such? Bits me. Because I use my real name. So what does the other members think about it........

Most people don't give their real names online, because it's good policy to give Personal Info like that.
:monk: :monk: :monk: :monk: :monk:
I don't mind if people know my real name. They can't do much with it. But using it as a nick is dumb. A nickname is a nickname. Period.

I dont really know wat difference it makes, using old nik or real name. My nik where i come from is iCEMAN, most people do not even know what my real name, but for some reason which i cant remember i decided to go with my real name in this forum.

For me it's because I just like "Carnage"... It's the name I've always used, and will use.
I don't really care if people know my real name... Only not my surname.

Nicknames are nicknames... and in the internet comunity it represents a person a lot more than any name personal name could.

Maybe because they're so ashamed of their horrible spelling? :em0128:
That and this forum may include anime, software, movies, music, etc. that is licensed / copyright / trademarked. Not to mention Hentai and Doujin, information which some people would not like others to know they've seen.
Other senseless but interesting to think about questions: (You're welcome to post new threads with these as I'll probably post 'em eventually anyway. Please only one at a time so the topics can be discussed thoroughly.)
Why do stay in your house and lock your door?
Why aren't all the doors and walls of your bathroom made of completely clear glass?
Why do you wear clothes (especially when it's so hot)?
Why don't guys to this :kaiasu03: to all girls they meet?
Why do you like hentai so much?
For that matter, why do you like anime so much?
Is it hard to live and easy to die, or easy to live and hard to die, and why?
etc...

There are many reason as why people don't want to use their real names. Some prefer not to give out personal info, some just don't care, some don't want others to know who they are......etc. Besides, real names aren't as creative and interesting as user/nick names.

Have to agree with u on that one. Real names are just as cool and unique! Besides i wudnt do nything that i wud b ashamed to admit, i love yuri - hentai and i make no effort to keep that a secret... real name or nik it doesnt matter, i m who i m and i aint afraid to show myself as that.
pretmaker

I do not see a problem with using a nickname or your real name...
I do notice that if I use my real name then allot of people have trouble saying it. While Pretmaker is sort of a nice name. It is not so hard to say it out loud. While in my country we had the following variations on my call name. (Sean)
(e is spoken as in bed)
Seen, Steen, Sien, Stien, Sean
So trust me I had all kind of names... you should have a dutch person say that name. and the variations... Then you will know why I do not use my real name for one thing. Next reason is that my real name would not be usefull to know. Why would you use your realname for this puprose. Imagine that you will meet some1 in RL. Then that person can better adres you with your nickname then your real name. Especially seeïng the customs in different countries.
In Japan we use the surname with an extra word behind it. Here in the Netherlands we just use the frontname if we know each other. But if we do not know each other as friends then we use the surname with meneer in front (mister). So becaus of the customs and complications endured with a real name it seems wiser to use a nickname.
Imagine that I am dining with you, and you would need the salt.
You will ask me for the salt. But how do you ask? Are you going to say:
Hey Sean, can you pass me the salt?
Hey mate, can you pass me the salt?
Excuse me mister .... , can you pass me the salt?
It does not make any sense to me. Especially since we all have our own customs concerning names.
But if we take Pretmaker for example.
Imagine saying the following.
Hey Pretmaker, can you pass me the salt?
Hey Pret, can you pass me the salt?
That is allot nicer. Since you do not use a real name. That does not confuse people allot who are worried about their customs...
Although you should still mind your customs offcorse... But if you have a few less customs then the more important ones that you should mind are less hard to keep in mind.
That is my theorie about nicknames eather way :)

yea, u're not really hiding your real name... just going by an alias or nickname if u will... whats the fun of using your real name as a screen name?
i chose my name a long time ago, and liked it, so been using it every since... cuz i'm a crazy fool, with a dark sense of humor... so my alias suits me well...
but i don't mind if people know my real name either, if u talk to me long enough and ask nicely, i'll tell ya..... :JFBQ00213070516A:

Heh for me my nicks (I have two) have meaning and they have connection between them. In those few words I have my sentence for life it's like a mini signature of my own chose. The other nick name I'm using is PeaceLover and my sig should lead you to the connection between them. ( More or Less nothing is said straight in this world. )
krono
01-29-2008, 01:51 PM
I do it only because krono represents more of who i am than my original name (alejandro), but i think everyone chose a nickname for different reasons, not precisely for hidding their identities (some do), besides the nickname was chosen by you, and how do you see yourself, how you felt that particular moment or just because you wanted to make a joke, while your name was chosen by your parents, sometimes without even thinking the meaning of the name :aty:

Aur0ra
02-03-2008, 04:42 AM
Well for me it comes back to customs as pretmaker stated, i prefer to be referred to by my nickname, all that aside id be happy to divulge my real first name to ONLY those that feel they want to get to know me better, to acquaintances i will always be referred to Aur0ra, so basically your nick online is like your title in real life, do your friends call you Mr, Mrs, Miss or Master no they call you by your real name and thats because they know you, So put simply i don't like being called my real name by people i don't know.

I just like my nickname better than my real one. I mean if my friends want to know it, sure I'll tell them. I'll tell anyone my real name. It's Brian. But the one thing that I keep sacred is my face >_>; I think I is ugleh. So I like keeping that to myself. My nickname is Zeke, it's my most familiar name.

Anonymity is the best thing about the internet. It's why people can just really be themselves online without fear of stigma. Because there is less risk of other people you're interacting with knowing who you are, there is an increased potential for masquerading, but there's also a great potential for people to be able to freely express themselves.

Well, I don't really care if I use my name or not, but when I saw everyone else had unique usernames I figured that was the way to go.....but we see how that one turned out. Plus, it's just good policy to not use your name so I tend to keep with what I've learned.

I find hiding my real name fun...It gives me a superhero king of feeling to it = )
But mostly because being unknown is for the best (no pun intended) because sometimes, if you say the wrong thing, no one would know it was you!

Locke
02-21-2008, 08:51 AM
I used to use my real name, until I realized it probably wasn't the smartest thing I could do. So I used the nick of my first character ever. But that name kept getting misunderstood. So I switched to another one of my characters, but it didn't really stick. Then I re-read Ender's Game and decided to go with Locke. While I have no problem with my real name being known, my question is, why? It doesn't need to be broadcast to the world. If someone asks, I'll tell them, but I happen to really like this nick.

I use my real name on most forums, but here I used the same ID as my animesuki one, which I had before I started using my Lora ID. And after Lora, it became 'Lora Elric' as a joke. You'd have to be on BSG forums to understand. ;;;

Well, maybe because of us here are not the ones that others know in real life? Coz in internet, you can do things that you wish to do but was hold back in real life by many reasons. So it's like "remain invisible/ anonymous" in the internet without your real name. By the way, do people really know if you're using your real name or not? Coz antitrust is what we're practising in internet, to protect ourselves.
