I'm not sure what my problem is and what should I do, but it doesn't hurt to post here, right?
Anyway, I own a Dell P791 monitor. It's a quite good monitor except one thing - I can't find any drivers for it (in fact, no XP compatible). The monitor is fine and somehow runs well on basic XP drivers, but...
When I try to run many games (for example, Legacy of Kain : Defiance), my screen blinks and shows flying grey box "sync. out of range (a changing number ~100)kHz 150Hz NP".
I suspect that for some reason, my PC tries to run them on 800x600 resolution with 150Hz refresh rate, settings my monitor doesn't support (it can take only 100 Hz with 800x600), so I always get the grey box of death. Changing the settings to 1024x768 makes the game run fine (I did that once by adding " -width 1024 -height 768" line to the shortcut), but for some reason, I can't make many games run in 1024x768 with that simple shortcut change.
Anyway, to make it simple for you :
1) Do you know where to find Dell P791 monitor drivers?
2) Do you know any ways to make my computer automatically run in 800x600 with only 100Hz refresh rate?
3) Do you know any ways how to force games to run in 1024x768 (except .ini file editing and that shortcut line change I gave you)?
Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Well for one thing I might be talking about a different monitor but is it a Dell UltraScan P791 17 inch (16.0" VIS) color monitor. Which is a CRT type (A big monitor non-LCD). If so I think its refresh rates like 120Hz and supports up to 1280x1024 res.
Also I think it went by the name of K2025JJ. But then again I don't know that much about monitors.

That's right, it's my monitor. Yet, I can't find any drivers for K2025JJ as well...

So you have tried the windows default drivers with no luck. Thats odd my friend has your monitor and it works on his. Have you tried to see if there are any updates for monitor drivers?

most Monitor Drivers install automaticly when u connect them to the computer on the initial startup.
As for external drivers, most games don't care bout Monitor Drivers, but Graphic Drivers which are displayed on the monitor.
I don't think there are external Monitor Drivers becasue they are all Plug&Play.
Find out ur graphics card type, and try searching for Updated drivers for them, and it may work right for you.

Nope, basic Windows drivers support my monitor; in fact, I'm using this monitor right now. Yet, for some reason PC "believes" that my monitor supports higher resolutions/refresh rates than it should. This causes problems mentioned in my first post.
In few words, it works, but not fully (at least I believe so).

Well you might want to go into your games settings and see if you can edit inside the game itself. kinda like wow or Crysis where you can edit inside the game if it lets you get that far. Also is the game you trying to play need direct X 9?

You see, you just don't get that far. As soon as movies end, the grey box appears and you don't see anything else. It wouldn't be a problem if I could simply change resolution inside the game. Some games can be run in 1024x768 with a shortcut change, some can be run by editing .ini file, some have "settings" programs, but some have nothing of the above. These are the games I have trouble with.
All of them require DirectX 9 or less. I always reinstall DirectX if the game asks me to, so this shouldn't be my problem.

It might be if your graphics card can't handle it. I believe it was a 8 type of card.
Also you might want to check this out. But if your game doesnt need DirectX 9 then we can always hunt around until we find the issue at hand.

DirectX doesn't seem to be my problem, as I can run some games with DX 9 and the game I'm now having problems with is Legacy of Kain, which requires DX 8.1 or higher.
That thread.. the guy is complaining about totally different thing, FPS (frames per second). For me... I'm gettign no frames at all, so that doesn't help.
I tried to run the game with lower DX (as that topic suggested) but that didn't work.
Edit : oh well, you have tried anyway. + rep to you both ^^

your monitor like mine is ancient it seems we both need an upgrade there
but there is only one place you can find driver for windows vista or xp for that monitor .
and that's
Control panel > Device Manager ( i won't recall where is it exactly in XP but if it's not in the control panels it must be under system>hardware or something like that) > monitors
now right click on the monitor it show >properties >Driver >Update driver > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of ...........> Clear the tick beside "show only compatible hardware" > In left pane Choose Dell >in right pane Choose Your monitor it's pretty down the list more clearly at the middle of the list at least in vista > next > Close .
Ntune can do what you want about refresh rate and resolution.

The graphics card is ancient.
Anyways, since you're on XP:
Right click on your desktop and select properties,
Click settings,
Underneath color quality click advanced,
Choose the monitor tab,
Select your permanent refresh rate and click the box beneath that says hide modes this monitor cannot display.

lol I know that both monitor and graphics card are ancient. :6:
Fappy : doesn't help.
JEskandari : I tried that once, didn't work. I'll post here if it fails second time.
I think I found a driver for Your monitor: link ([Only registered and activated users can see links])
Altough it does not mention Windows XP (it didn't even existed at that time). xD
#2 and #3: No idea, sorry.
But I think the VGA is that's not functioning as it supposed to.
Can You tell us what games can You run and what can't You?
Btw, LoK:Defiance is an awesome game! :D
