The Mayan culture has the title of one of the most advanced civilizations in Mesoamerica. Their culture started around 1500B.C. (before Christ) and their ruins were found until the 1950's or 1960's now there are a couple things that need to be set straight.
The translations:
The Mayan hieroglyphs were translated using the "comparative method" which according to linguists this method is highly unreliable. This is a special case since none of the indigenous people living in Guatemala are descendants of the Mayans no matter how hard they want to believe it, the archaeologists could have been lied to.
The location:
The Mayan ruins are located in one of the most dangerous jungles of the world, Peten. In this jungle if you're not careful you can end up eaten if not by jaguars or snakes you could be eaten by small insects which find the human skin very tasty and cozy.
The ruins are located away from any water source and considering how dense and dangerous the jungle is and that there aren't any stone quarries to dig up the materials is highly likely that they didn't build those ruins themselves.
Inventions:
Many say that the Mayan culture is very advanced for discovering the calendar, the 1 and the 0 any many other things.
Actually the calendar was invented by the Sumer civilization which predates the Mayan culture at least the 4th millenium B.C. just as we have it today; the Zero (0) was discovered by the Babylonians by the 2nd millenium B.C both the calendar and the numbers used by Babylonians is a sexagesimal system (60). Which is 365 days, 1 day: 24 hours divided in two 12 double hours.
The Mayan calendar dates until 600BC with 260 days which experts say that this comes from the duration of the pregnancy of a human woman.
Prophecies:
Given that the Mayan people disappeared by the time that the Spanish came to colonize America, the indigenous people that live in Guatemala come from different tribes from Mexico and the rest of Central and South America.
There wasn't any living members of the Mayan people by the time when the ruins were discovered, the translation can be totally wrong and same goes for the calendar given the time when this civilization started.
Take notice that Cristopher Columbus arrived at these shores by 1492A.D and the Mayan culture ended around 900A.D.
The reliability on the method used to translate and that no one of that culture was alive by the time the ruins were discovered...
...The prophecy of 2012 is wrong.
