I've always wondered this, but why does button up shirts have the bottons on the oposite sides for each gender, like

Example
For male Button-up Shirts the Buttons are on the left side, and the holes are on the Right side.
For female Button-up Shirts it's the opposite...

This has confused me for the longest time.

Boxers.... I know of Girls that wore Boxers...

I asked somewhere alse, and some1 mentioned that it was probaby becasue of durring the old European Kings/queens time when royalty had servants to dress them up.
The King dressed themselves, and the servants dressed the queen which it was reversed for easier access to help them get dresed.

I'm not sure on that one, but it's a possibility.

oh dear, i hate to wikify for my first post, but i feel i must.....

Blouses have buttons reversed from that of mens' shirts. That is, the buttons are normally on the wearer's left-hand and the buttonholes are on the right. The reasons for this are unclear, however. Several theories exist although none have conclusive evidence. Some suggest this custom was introduced by launderers so they could distinguish between women's and men's shirts. One theory purports that the tradition arose in the Middle Ages when one manner of manifesting wealth was by the number of buttons one wore. Another that the original design was based on armour which was designed so that a right-handed opponent would not catch their weapon in the seam and tear through, this would also mean that a person could draw a weapon with their right-hand without catching it in a loose seam of their own clothes. Female servants were in charge of buttoning their mistress's gowns (since the buttons were usually in the back). They tired of attempting to deal with buttons that were, from their point of view, backwards and as such they started reversing the placement when making or repairing them.

Although in all the cases proposed the reasons for the distinction no longer exist, it continues out of custom or tradition.

eventhough theres "[non sexual]" in the title , how bout this idea: when a guy is taking the girl's clothes off, he doesnt get confused about unbuttoning her shirt....cause otherwise it would be mirrored, and it could confuse some hot (but not that intelligent) studs XD

You might think I'm kinda geek or something, but I watched History Channel (yes... I watch History Channel alot.. Both the normal and the HD) and they said that is usually why the buttons are placed different. I think the show was named "Just another day", or something.

I would think that, as previously mentioned, it would be because it is easier to distinguish the actual shirts themselves?
Guess someone should look into that?:7c00a009:

Normally I have answers to random factoids like this one, but I'm stumped. Probably just something that stuck with fashion through the ages... or something along those lines.
