Divx is alright, but the codec is useless when playing other file types.
MPC playes AVI, MKV, OGM, RM, RMVB.
Divx don't play all thoes, and MPC uses less computer memory to play the vids also.
the CCCP Codec pack with MPC is best all around Player Codec so far.
I rarely have any problems, and if any occur, I use VLC player as a last resort.

I just use VLC media player. Plays almost everything and no codecs required for download.

yea but for MKV with external subs, u have to manually select the subs from the subs list when the vid starts, and VLC has terrible sub formatting, while MPC's subs of the same MKV have nice Effects on them depending upon the group.

I use a media decoder called ffdshow which pretty much gets ride of the need to use codec packs. I also use KMPlayer which kinda makes having ffdshow redundant since it contains most things including MKV, but ffdshow is just so convenient.

Go with what ElderKain said and use the CCCP pack. Also download and install GOM player. Its better then VLC player in that it can request information online about files that it doesnt recognize and update itself to play it. VLC player is good as a last resort player. Good luck!
i use k-lite and cccp
so search and dl should be able to play anything

i use a combination of cccp (without the players included) with DivX and CoreAVC Professional Edition (for h.264), as for players, i only use KMPlayer (the codec options modified for the best quality/performance) for any video file except for dvd's when i use Cyberlink PowerDVD

You should never have multiple Codecs installed, unless they are all in the same pack.
Having multiples can casue conflicts which may not let most vids play.
Just have CCCP Codec Pack and use MPC with that, and u will have No codec problems

thy are not packs, CoreAVC is used only for h.264 encoding (i don't use the ffdshow provided by cccp for this kind of encoding, if i'm not mistaking klite has coreavc but i don't know for sure), as for the DivX, i use it for the Web Player and the codec dosent come in conflict with anything, i use the same thing for years and untill now i havent had any problems.

yes, it's bad to have more then 1 codec pack installed, but normal standalone codecs won't do much, unless you install 2 or more of the same types...
and just for your info, CCCP isn't the answer for everyone, in my case CCCP is junk and never ever worked for me, tried all players and got all errors, and only had CCCP installed
but having encoded files for about 3-4 years now I've gone back to the basics, and it works perfectly
I'm using CoreVorbis, ffdshow, MatroskaSplitter and VSFilter and can play almost all files, except for a few, but most of the times those files are just encoded in a weird way...
but lol, this makes me remember my old days, I had all kinds of codec packs installed and miraculously I was able to play and encode files xD
but only about 70% of all files I downloaded >.<
anyway, if you want a program to play movies I suggest VLC, doesn't need any extra codecs since it has built-in codecs that won't interfere with the rest of your desktop...

What I would recomend...
K-lite mega codec pack with media player classic. It will play pretty much anything thrown its way. No reason to install the entire pack either, only what you need.
[Only registered and activated users can see links]
VLC for anything that doesn't work in media player classic.
Realplayer installed for realmedia codecs.
Quicktime for its codecs.
-----
MediaInfo as a last resort in case I ever run into a file that I can't seem to play. It basically tells you what is inside your media so that you can google for what codecs you need to download. I have never needed it though.

:EDIT:
I will say one last thing though, the VLC icon is ugly. I always change it to something else. x3

VLC always gave me hell when it comes to subs on MKV files...
Either the Subbing filter is crappy, and causes the most pixelated text subs, or the fact, if lets say there is Subbers notes which normally appear other than the bottom on MPC, they overlap over the subs at the bottom, which makes the subs look all jumbled.
Then there's the fact, that subs on MKV files arn't automaticly displayed, and u have to turn them on Manually...
To me MPC that comes with the CCCP codec is best, because u'll run into a hell of a lot of troubles when playing MKVs on VLC...
Also MPC can play RM,RMVB, etc... and VLC won't open the vids on RM,RMVB files...
The Auto frame resize on VLC can be hell also, which actually lags the videos on it's startup of playing, while MPC uses a hell of a lot less computer resources to play vids on it.

CCCP ftw, comes with the z player that works (imo) better than VLC, at the very least with the subtitles. VLC also moves soft subs that are supposed to display on the top (like notes etc) down to the bottom where you can get some nasty overlap with the dialogue.
If you're running vista, there's a codec pack out there that upgrades your wmp to play almost any media file if you don't want CCCP.

just use FFDshow for divx, xvid ,avi,....... nearly all other codecs like klite ,cccp ,vista codec pack ,........ use old version of it then why not use the latest version and it has the easiest and most uptodate encoder.
for Rm ,Rmvb file if you have no special player in your mind use real media player 11 ,it's the latest from real com and if you use Internet explorer it allow you to download files from sites like youtube.if you want to use another player ,then use the latest version of real alternative.
for QT,Mov .there is only to program that can decode them quick time player ,and quick alternative .i wont recommend quick time player it's the most hideous player i have ever saw ,just use the latest version of Quick alternative.
for players i myself use COWON Media Center - jetAudio Or sometimes real player for the change of the scenery .but windows media player classic and vlc player have their own fans too.
for the sake of the compatibality install CoreAvc but new vrsion of FFDShow must be able to manage those high definition files.
if you want to see the games intros and such without playing ganes i also recommend RADTools to view bink and smacker files and also On2 Vp6 decoder And On2 Vp7 decoder for soome other games.
at last install monkey audio codec but i wont think you will see to much of theses files in last 5 year i only 1 time encountered with them
by installing those you made your own codec pack with the most up todate codecs ,and they are not codec packs to conflict with each other and more important maybe in 5 year 1 time you encounter something that those can't open for you.

I use a codec for Windows Media Player called Storm Codec which plays about every video file format out there, I do use VLC often though because for some reson its better for full screen as it doesn't distort much pixels.

I use the Codec pack all in one
[Only registered and activated users can see links]
Then I use VLC for anything WMP can't do. And with the Firefox WMP plugin, I can watch pretty much anything now...
I use the CCCP bundle along with zoom player because it works well when I want to just lay back and control everything via my keyboard. I agree with ElderKain, media player classic is one of the best for subs, if you are going to watch anything with external sub files then do not use vlc, it is horrible and looks bad it sometimes even lags!

KM-Player is the player you'll need for your movies as it plays most major file formats such as OGM, AVI, Real Media, MKV and DVD's MPEG-2 format. You'll hardly need other programme to help with your need with KM-player.

klite codec pack for players like MPC.KMPlayer for its simplicity of playing almost any format.vlcplayer for just in case especially for h264 video in AVI files.

It includes all the codecs that I need together with Media Player classic.
It is a must for those who encode videos.

I usually just DL rmvb versions of anime, so I watch them on RealPlayer and have no need of codec packs. But on a side note, K-Lite slows my system down, so I hate it :punch:

For video...well,I'm using KMplayer,it has integrated codecs in it,so it has no problem in opening anything except real media format...if you need it,just install real alternative and that's it...
Aside of that,I'm using K-Lite codec pack, best out there ^^
