As topic : do you have MSN, Skype, AIM, mIRC or any other instant messaging problems installed and what's your opinion about them? Do you prefer chatting over MSN to real face-to-face chat? How long do you spend chatting each day?

Definately.
Face to face talking is way better than any chat program there is =/
Besides, if you don't know the one your chatting with in person then how can you be sure with who (or what....) your chatting with..
alot of people that use chatprograms also tend to act differently than they really are

I can go either way, theres some people I can only talk to over MSN and then theres people I'd rather talk to face to face as I am able to since they live near me.
But MSN is fun too sometimes especially when you are sick and you would rather not leave your house.

Chat programs are too intrusive... right in the middle of working on something that window pops up, interrupting me. I use ICQ now, used to use Yahoo and the MS one but things (and time) all got carried away.

What I've been having a LOT of fun with is IMVU: [Only registered and activated users can see links]

It's a 3D IM where you design an avatar and chat room(s); they have a catalogue of apparel and zillions of items to dress up your avi and surroundings. You invite your other IMVU buddies into the room and all can chat with your typed words appearing as "thought-balloons" over each avi's head. Pretty fun, esp when compared to other progs.

They have loads of anime-related designs too! For instance, aside from my "normal" avatar, I also used a separate email account to set up another one, Lily from my (unpublished) novel. I bought her a Japanese Garden room, with sakura trees, temple, gong and lots of other goodies, bought her a kimono and hairstyle w/chopsticks in it (looks better than it sounds LOL) and sandals. You can go on and on with it, believe me LOL

I don't have time to chat much if at all (see top paragraph), but it's a lot of fun to play with! If curious, check out Lily's anime-themed page here:

(The Elfen Lied video is broke (damn you Youtube!) and needs replacing, but I'm sure you've seen the OP already :-P )

This is the way to go if you're thinking of chatting with a bunch of your friends ;-)

I'm curious about Skype, as another circle of friends use it, but I'm just too wary of additional time-sinks LOL

Sorry I'm late on this, I don't think email notification is working for me :-(

I guess the problem with the "failing" is that the faces aren't all that different from each other, but there are a LOT of options to add on to help the illusion, like clothes for instance. I was able to buy Lily the outfit Lucy wore at the end of "Elfen Lied", for instance. With some red hair and thinner lips maybe she could be brought back to life ;-)
:beautifu2:

And for those using dial-up, forget about it; it's too slow for that kind of 3D chat. But there's a lot of anime fans there, which is why I brought it up :-)

I never like chatting online.... Talking face to face seems a lot more easier since there are a lot of things can be effectively convey....

Can't say i hate it, i still use them sometimes, but not too often.

I don't have too many friends in my messenger list, and mostly i do talking face-to-face in real life.

Yeah, i'm also quite friendless in chat programs :)
Ah well who cares about that, as long as we have character! :D
Let's just drop the IMVU-persons talk... because whatever the arguments may be it's still a bad idea to copy a anime char in any way :monk:

I have msn and I have irc but I don't like chat programs. So rarely i am online... My friends complain but I prefer talk personally or by phone (skype and msn by voice it's okay too but I still prefer the phone).

yes, IMVU is quite fun, but everytime I need to update the updater doesn't work for some reason, so I have to un-install and re-install everytime, oh well

chatting online with friends is nice

i mean i don't get bored, and i feel that for a lot of people they talk differently then IRL... for example a few people i noticed are more serious online

or online some people use internet memes and such

Wha? How can it be a bad idea to do that??? Maybe you just don't like IMVU? It's not really "being" the character, just dressing up your avatar to look like one (hopefully LOL). The best you can hope for is a near-lookalike anyway, and it's obvious that the person behind it is a buddy or another person typing, unless you're all like roleplaying.

It's more like cosplaying, actually, and nothing wrong with that :em096:

Besides, like a lot of other posters here, I rarely chat anyway LOL It's just fun dressing up and modifying my avatars, and fun to see what people come up with. There are thousands of anime-related items :beautifu2:

In fact, I just bought a Japanese "garden" room, complete with sakura trees, floating boats and a crescent moon to sit on. Pretty cool, but since I don't chat, just used for snapping photos and stuff.

Anyway, it beats looking at a dull chat box LOLOL

Computer chatting, phone chatting and face2face chatting have their respective pros and cons. Computer chatting can be done while you are browzing websites or doing something else at the same time, phone chatting is a convenient way of interactive chatting which information can be transferred more efficiently than computer chatting. And the f2f chatting is a more social way of chatting. It is not merely a way for exchange information...

They are very convenient, since a lot of my school mates live all over now, so it is easy to keep in touch.
