Based on a Japanese visual novel developed by 5bp and Nitroplus, Chaos;Head is a delusional murder mystery story, with strong elements of gore, psychology and science fiction. The game uses a feature called a "delusional trigger", which allows the player adjust the realness or surrealness of the perspective of the main character, which directly affects the storyline.
The main character, Takumi is a troubled young man who struggles to distinguish reality from his delusions, while being pursued by the perpetrator of a series of bloody murders, (or so he thinks). His travels take him in and around Shibuya, Tokyo and his adventures bring him in contact with various scientific themes such as the concepts of matter, antimatter, and the Dirac sea.
The story has been serialized in the manga magazine Dengeki Daioh. A second manga adaptation (described as a side story) will appear in the Sept 08 issue of Comic Alive.
Review:
If you know me very well, you will know that I am a very picky about character drawings and backgrounds. And Chaos;Head is no exception, no matter how much I was waiting for it to be released and aired in Japan. However, I must say that the story is intriguing enough for me to keep watching and watching, despite the horrible art.
Story
I must say, the story of Chaos;Head is very intriguing and mysterious. It drives off from the usual anime, since it is a psychological/horror series. It certainly stays true to its genre since it deals with concepts like delusions and murder chains. Anyhow, Chaos Head's strongest point is probably the story itself. It keeps you at the edge of the seat, and it might be slow at times, but when it comes down to the crunch, it is exceptional. The story is also much deeper than what you think. Its not all about "boy sees murder, more murder happens, omg whodunit?!?" in Chaos;Head. If you think that, oh boy are you in for a ride. Believe me. Since from reading the plot, I thought I was just going to be looking at gruesome murders time to time and the police trying to find out who did it. But, of course, I was in for a shock. And I bet you will as well :P
Story Rating: 10/10
"A twistful plot that keeps you guessing and wanting more. It is above expectations and is absolutely top-notch. But wait, who's eyes are those eyes?"
Art
Man. I've gotta say. The art is absolutely terrible. It looks very outdated, even the colours! I'm very picky in art and this is definitely one of the worst in a 2008 anime. However, there is one thing I kinda liked. The 3d Water Wheel. I absolutely loved it. XD It was probably the only highlight in terms of Art. Now, I know I'm being harsh in the art of the Chaos;Head anime, but I've just gotta point out that I'm only very harsh since the graphics of the Visual Novel of Chaos;Head was beyond amazing. Look at the pics below and compare:

So yea...if the anime had the graphics of the visual novel, boy would I have given it a perfect score. Sadly, that is not the case.
Art Rating: 3/10
"Very low budget looking and cheap animations. The 3d Water Wheel gave it 3 points though."
Sound
I have nothing much to say about the bgm of Chaos;Head. It wasn't exceptional, but it wasn't bad either. The Op and Ed were quite nice as well :) An Ok music score over all :)
Sound Rating: 7/10
"Nice BGMs and Op and Ed. Helped set the atmosphere :)"
Enjoyment
Well, it was both good and bad XD Sometimes, the story completely blew me away and I enjoyed it, but sometimes, the plot went too slow and I suddenly notice how horrible the art is again. It's definitely a "Wow, the end already?" type of show, which means that time goes by quickly when you watch it. So, nice and enjoyable overall.
Enjoyment Rating: 8/10
"Quite enjoying to watch. Well, unless you are young and they show the scary scenes of course."
Final Rating: 7.5/10
Even though it had horrible artwork, the story definitely compensates for it. Fans of Horror will surely like this ^^ Recommended.
