I tend to agree that most of the older anime are better quality, much like old skool gaming (NES style) had to rely on content over flashy graphics in order to be successful. Funny though the perception of what classic anime is; most of my Japanese friends consider works like Astro Boy or Kimba to be 'classic anime'. While there's a number of great anime that've been released since CG inception its hard to beat the older stuff. To narrow it down to one I'd probably have to go with Nausicaa, though also love other series like KOR, Dirty Pair TV, or Lupin III (movies and TV).

Re: Favorite classic anime?

If I had to talk about my favorite " Classic " animes, I would go back to my childhood and school days. ( 2002 isn't that old in my sense )
My favorite classic animes are :

Aoi Blink

Mysterious Cities Of Gold

Future Boy Conan

Spaceship Sagittarius

Bosco Adventure

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils

Daddy Long Legs

A Little Princess Sara

Nadia : The Secret of Blue Water

All these .. also never to forget ...

Captain Tsubasa

Moero! Top Striker

Fight, Kickers!

I hope some of you have actually seen these and remembers them ...

Quite the collection of classic anime there, seen all or in part all of em except for Bosco Adventure and Spaceship Sagittarius. Though its older, Nadia seems to be a bit out of place with all the others; doesn't have quite the same old classic feel like reading an antique book does. Recently I re-watched the original Astro Boy and was constantly amused at what people's perception of what the future would be some 50 years ago.

One underlying idea that I never could understand the fixation on is the use of steam power. So many old/classic animes build everything around steam power (even if its ridiculous like have a steam powered can opener). Earlier in the 30's and 40's when studio's like Disney or Warner Brothers were doing movies/tv series they never had the same fixation/fascination with steam power like the Japanese seem to have.

Re: Favorite classic anime?

I'm on my third complete run through of Ranma 1/2 in my life. It still hasn't gotten old for me. Don't think it will.
