Re: {Philosophers' Corner}

That's true in a way. But, you take painkillers to inhibit an enzyme called Cyclooxigenase-2, so that it can't synthesize Prostaglandin E2 which causes pain through the ventromedial nuclei of the hypothalamus. If it was as simple as you said I wouldn't have to study for at least a decade.

Btw, all science is based on trial and error. You come up with a theory (or model), you test the theory and then you modify (or scratch) the theory based on the results.

u eat painkiller herb because one time u tried it and realized ur libs are numb,, lol,, no science there..
there actually is science in that. you came up with the theory that if you ate that herb that the pain would dull and after eating it you discovered you were right. that plant could of killed you but you expiremented and it didn't. so in a way you did a small scientific study of wether or not that herb would numb the pain

Re: {Philosophers' Corner}

On the subtopic of Religion:- Surely you can see the possibility or science being the answer to how and not the answer to why all the things in the universe happen? Many scientists in this day and age are still choosing to maintain their spiritual ties to their own religions, giving a working example that an informed person can still believe in a higher being.

On Matirealism vs Spiritualism I think that both are necessary for a truly fulfilling life. If you think about it; humans are very fragile creatures, needing just the right temperatures, air density, etc. to be able to survive and thrive. The same is right for being Matirealistic. If you let your possessions/ambitions cloud your soul then even though you might be happy, you wouldn't really feel it lasting. The same is true for Spiritualism; Being overly spiritual removes any acute joys you may get from getting/giving posessions.
Hm... I think my argument is getting convoluted so please don't mind if I remain sitting on the fence for this one, saying that both are necessary in order to feel truly happy, and to make others happy in your life.

It works.
I agree that both are needed to have a truly wonderful life

Giving that this thread seems to be dying and that comments like this annoy me, (this one isn't so bad as these things go though) I thought I'd start something which is generally overlooked but seems like an essential foundation of understanding to me. Namely what is Science?

No need for long answers, just put it as planely as you can, what do you understand science to be?

Re: {Philosophers' Corner}

To put it very shortly, I think that science is the pursuit of "evidence based knowledge" with a touch of hypocrisy. At least for the time being.

Btw, I wouldn't have thought that everyone will be on 'the both are necessary' side, like me.
