Ryu is a deaf-mute and has been working very hard at a factory to pay for a kidney transplant for his sister. Willing to do anything to save his sister Ryu entertains some daft ideas when the money needed is forever out of reach. In desperation, Ryu and his best friend Cha Yeong-mi (Du-na Bae) decide to kidnap a wealthy businessman’s daughter. With nothing but good intentions, absolutely everything goes wrong

The pace of the movie is slow and plays out like a drama, although the plot is more an action/thriller. Director Chan-wook Park masterfully plays on viewers’ emotions and sense of morality. The film is complex regarding both plot and intent of all characters involved. Sympathy For Mr Vengeance is a slow train to hell, and not for the weak of heart. Although violence is minimal, and never glorified, it is brutal when it occurs. For me, I could sum up the film merely by putting a question mark at the end of the title = Sympathy For Mr Vengeance?

Highly, highly recommended…this is the first in Director Chan-wook Park’s revenge trilogy (Sympathy For Mr Vengeance / Old Boy / Sympathy For Lady Vengeance). I will be putting up all three films in the next few days. Except for theme, the films are unrelated. I cannot stress enough how all three of these films are an absolute treasure…they are works of genius.

Also I would like to say that the performances in this film are tops, and watching the increadibley cute and spunky Du-na Bae was a joy.

I've been trying to find this movie at all of the video places in town and no one has it (very few have even heard of it). Thank you very much for this... if it wasn't for seeing it I probably wouldn't have registered!
