i'm using windows xp sp3 and i have never encountered any unsolvable problems with it :) i have just changed the theme to low profile for better performance, my pc is gone for repairs and i'm on a p2 with 128mb of ram and 4mb of vram.

@lemnear: he claims to have tried using firefox as well and it didn't solve the problem as well, while on the other hand i opened the same links on another computer from my school using IE 7 today and they worked fine, which means there is no problem with the site itself but from his side.

Didn't catch in his posts that he'd tried Firefox as well. When I tried to access the links from the page I didn't have problems so at least right now they do appear to be working. It is possible that when he first tried to access them there was a problem with the page. IE can be very bad about re-using items from the cache instead of actually reloading the page.

If you can download other files from the same site the problem is likely with the page, or IE only reading its cache files. In which case clear all the temp files and browsing history to ensure it loadsd the page as it currently is.

If you're unable to download other files from the same site then it would seem that either your isp is blocking the page, or there is some spyware or spyware software that is preventing you from viewing the page correctly. Some spyware programs will block either whole pages when they see them as a security risk, or block portions of the page since they may be trying to execute something on your machine (malicous or not, they'll still block it). Other thing I could think of that could be the culprit is some part of the page isn't able to load and is preventing the whole page to finish loading.

Adding a blocklist to your hosts file can sometimes resolve this as it flat out rejects content from certain locations so you're left with only the meat of the page. Some pop up pages or instant re-directs can keep you from accessing the page, when if you turn all scripting off none of that extra garbage happens and just the desired page loads.

From the owners side, its a faster way to write pages that are frequently dynamically generated (which using older html practices can be very tedious) on the fly with much greater speed. Reading php can get confusing at times since the results of queries get put inline with the web address usually in the form of something like "post&=1133", to figure out what the code is trying to do is usually embeded into the address itself, if there's a lot of data addresses can get really long and hard to quickly decipher.

As a potential solution to the problem (there seems to be some other underlying problem here) I'd suggest you at least install Firefox on your machine for cases such as this. Generally in the past its been that the majority of the pages were specifically writen to be viewed/used in IE. That isn't the case anymore, pages are writen now to be more universal and not rely on proprietary code or browser specific functions that won't work in others (or even older versions of the same browser). You can use whichever browser you prefer of course, having another one as a backup for pages that don't seem to behave can save hours or frustration trying to get them to work in one browser, where they might work flawlessly in the other.

If the page(s) fail in both, then the problem gets much more complicated and you'd need to look at the page source coding to figure out what's going on behind the scenes.

Wo, slow down professor. So, what you mean is that if i install firefox into my machine, then everything is fix? Oh and this isn't a CSI crime scene investigation, no need to use "behind the scenes". Alright, i will check the problem. Thanks for the tips btw. Appreciate it. ^^

no not a virus, i was thinking all this time that he used firefox as well (dunno why), just to check it i opened the links here with my secondary firefox browser and they worked. so it's most likely IE 6 that is having problems, as Lemnear has mentioned previously most of the new sites are being designed considering the platform/structure of new the browsers.

it's simple as that, you are using IE 6, i am using xp sp2 myself atm due to the low performance of this computer so i had the same problem you have encountered. and who says that the newst versions of windows sucks? well vista does in many manners (some like it and some not, difference of taste) but i never had any problems with any version of xp i have used. well anyway i just confirmed it by downloading the files on the same computer with a different browser, the links are working totally fine for me, try using firefox or some other browser of your choice and they'll work out fine ( why the hell i was even thinking that you tried firefox? X_x )

Before dissecting IE try it first with Firefox (at least 3.0) and let us know if the pages work for you. Hopefully that should solve all your problems, with a slower system upgrading ie to its current version probably isn't in your best interests. With what you have now you could be missing an Active X file, or have some scripting setting wrong that's causing all this. Using something that is proven to work (Firefox) and testing it out should resolve it, if not it gives us a bigger clue into what could be the problem.

Another alternative browser could be Google Chrome, its imo the fastest browser out there (fast enough that you can notice the difference). It's pretty much a striped down web browser that has no features save bookmarks and basic file functions; like a high performance race car that only has what it needs, but does it extremely well.

With SP2 you shouldn't run into too many problems, though I've noticed that some new games/programs coming out are listing xp sp3 as the minimum requirement. I put sp3 on my xp (my gaming machine) computer largely out of convenience of not having to apply 70+ updates if you only have sp2 (recently had to do a fresh install). As far as Vista goes, unless you have SP2 installed it blows hard. Vista SP2 machines now outpeform XP or Win 7 machines in various areas, and is overall slightly slower than 7 (compared to SP1 which is noticeably slower).

All right. I will let you know as soon as possible if the firefox works. Oh and for your info, i am using IE 7 (haven upgrade to 8) and the Original XP. I really don't think any of these is a problem. The only thing i can think off is the line or address won't let me download it. I'll check throughly. Thanks anyway.
