With me it is a mixed bag. When I was little, I was moved around from place to place. My first language was either Canadian French or Hibernian, but I can't be sure. I remember learning my Catechism in French, but don't remember much now. I went to France on a trip a few years ago and studied some French for the trip. People there told me I had a Canadian accent, so I probably remember more than I think.

I do OK in latin and German and a little Cherokee and Irish. I can read a bit in German and have helped people translate papers into English. I can read the others, but not as well. I do better speaking and hearing.

A problem I have is that most languages I know are somewhat obscure, so it is hard to learn more about them as an adult.

I'm studying Japanese now and am making a lot more progress than I expected. I think that is because Japanese is not an alphabetic language. (I have trouble with alphebets) Still, though, I do better reading than writing.

So, you could say I'm fairly good in English and illiterate in about half a dozen languages.

1)I can only speak English at the moment. Here's the thing that puzzles me. I can understand some German, and Jicarilla, but cant speak it. Kind of sad really.
2)I'd love to learn any language, Right now I don't care whats taught, as long as it keeps me busy.
