To anyone who grew up playing games

This is directed at people who started playing games before the age of 10, and now are at least 18. Anyone can post, but I'd like input from people with at least 4 console gens under their belt (you don't actually have to own 4 generations of consoles)

I played a lot of games as a kid. Now in college I have more free time (CS majoring is easy at my school) but I play less games. Looking at the library of games I have (well my family has for the first few gens) the number seems to go down a lot with each generation.
I still play games a lot (Rock Band at least once a week for 4 hours with floor mates)
but I don't play a wide variety of games. Guitar Hero, Rock Band, SSBM.

I don't know if this is due to me not being able to afford a lot of new games, or me just not liking all the games that are coming out these days (how many FPS games do I need for the 360?)
Maybe it will get better in a year or so (I plan on getting a Wii down the road for gun-rail games, Galaxy, and TP)

So my questions:
Does it seem like you have fewer games than previous generations? (assuming you buy stuff)
Do you still play the same amount, but with the said limited selection? (if you do have the limited selection)

Re: To anyone who grew up playing games

I'm actually probably buying just as many games as I always have been. I'm 20 now and have been gaming since I was around 4, since then it's always been a big passion and quite an investment.. I do think I play the same amount too, usually a few hours a day if I get the chance.

Is the quality the same? Eh, not in replayability. I still think the SNES is my favorite system and I can always go back to it along with the NES, Genesis, and just have a blast with them.

I think a factor is that when you get older you just have more things to do. At this age we've got to worry about life ahead, work for some, college for some, etc and it kind of takes away some game time. If that makes sense?

My thoughts I guess.

Re: To anyone who grew up playing games

Back in the NES and n64 days the game dev's actually had to make a good story line to keep people playing and keep the games selling. Now a days it's just lets make the game look sexy and spend 5 million promoting it and that works....But as for the buying less games, Well there's so many random games that come out now a days, (like the atari and nes days) But back then the good games sold much better then now cause well they had great story lines and were entertaining (go look at game sales from older games in a year, Then go look at a game now it's sales in a year) But yea enough random mumbling cause I don't think it's making sense, All I care for now is a good multiplayer game that will keep me busy and the odd rpg...

(And what are you talking about? Yea the 360 has alot of FPS games, But there are still a good bunch of RPG games out there for it)

Re: To anyone who grew up playing games

Yeah, I don't think there's a lot of pride in developers like there used to be a few gaming generations ago. Seems like nowadays companies just want money, money, money.

Re: To anyone who grew up playing games

I started playing when i was 3 or 4 starting with super nintendo, sega genesis and n64. Back then doom for pc was also fun. I remeber playing it with my friends because i was too scared to play alone... I still do play probably because im addicted to it and i can't stop playing games anymore... I play the recent ones such as FEAR and some old school ones like cs and starcraft.

Re: To anyone who grew up playing games

Well began playing like around 6-7 and I had played nintendo, super nintendo, sega genesis, n64, playstation, etc. But I have to say that have kinda out grew it by now, due to less money spent on them lol. But orginally I played games since it was fun and a lot safer than playing in the street were gangs usually hang out (lived in the bad neighborhood in LA). I still play games once and awhile but it hasn't taken over my life like the old good day

Re: To anyone who grew up playing games

Yup I have found that I have less games for the new gen systems then the old ones and I would have to agree that the selection of games are a lot more limited in their creativity. I'm in collage so playing has been limited but when I do I go all out playing.

Re: To anyone who grew up playing games

Yeah as a college student the amount of video games I am able to purchase now is very limited. But I don't think their are that many good games out like there used to be. As if all of that is not enough everyone in my dorm only plays Madden or Halo. So I am pretty much alone.

I heard mixed reactions to Mass Effect, I know Oblivion is kick ass, and that Eternal Sonata was bad
those are the only RPGs i know of on the 360

thanks for the input everyone
it's good to know i'm not alone when it comes to playing less games but still liking them (if that makes any sense)
