"Cosmic Era 73. Though the signing of a peace treaty brought the war between the Naturals and Coordinators to an apparent close, tensions fueled by the continued threat of Blue Cosmos continue to run high. During a conference between PLANT chairman Gilbert Dullindal and Orb representative Cagalli Yula Athha concerning the threat of a new military arms race, an Alliance special forces team attacks the ZAFT base they're meeting at and makes off with three new Gundam mobile suits. Forced to pursue them, Shinn Asuka of ZAFT and Athrun Zala of Orb set out aboard the new space battleship Minerva, and engage the retreating Alliance strike team in combat. But just as they catch up to the fleeing ship, the crew of the Minerva receives word of an even greater catastrophe in the making, which will undoubtedly re-ignite the brutal war between the Naturals & Coordinators all over again."
Coordinators/Newtype
Spoiler!
Coordinator- A human being whose mental and physical abilities have been enhanced through genetic engineering. Coordinators learn more quickly than normal humans, and their bodies are stronger, faster, and virtually immune to disease. Due to these differences, they have often been viewed with jealousy and mistrust by unmodified "Naturals". In recent decades, a worldwide ban on genetic modification and a rising tide of anti-Coordinator sentiment have driven most of Earth's Coordinators to relocate to the orbital settlements known as PLANTs.
The genetic modifications that create a Coordinator can be performed only in the earliest stages of embryonic development. However, these genetic enhancements are then passed on to the Coordinator's children. When normal parents have their children turned into Coordinators, the children are described as first-generation Coordinators, whose own children will then be second-generation Coordinators, and so forth. Coordinators include, but are not limited too; Kira, Athrun, Yzak, Lacus, etc.
Newtypes are virtually the same as coordinators except that they are born with these "abilities" without any history of genetic modifications. In Gundam SEED the known Newtypes consisted of Mwu La Fllaga and Raww Le Klueze. In Destiny we are introduce to another Newtype named, Rey za Burrel. Newtypes were first introduced in U.C. Gundam.
Extended Human [Biological CPU]
Spoiler!
The Extended human was a secret Atlantic Federation development project that aimed to produce pilots for its mobile suits that could fight with the same efficiency as Coordinators. In its earlier stages, the project was codenamed "Biological CPU program".
First Stage Extended humans had some biotechnological modification and were mentally conditioned to eliminate their sense of fear and increase aggression in combat; the subjects were mostly regular pilots who were given regular doses of the performance-enhancing drug Gamma Glipheptin. This drug had a negative effect on the pilots' mental stability and caused them to behave in undesirable ways during battle; it also had a very brief duration, and as the effect wore off it left the pilots incapacitated with severe withdrawal symptoms as their nervous systems began to collapse without regular doses. Their loyalty to the Alliance was guaranteed by their addiction to Gamma Glipheptin. The first-stage test subjects were Clotho Buer, Orga Sabnak, and Shani Andras; all three were killed in battle during the closing stages of the Bloody Valentine War. Due to their required intake of drugs and harsh withdrawal symptoms, fans dubbed the trio "the Druggies," which tends to be used as an affectionate nickname rather than an insult.
Second Stage Extended humans were physically and psychologically altered with heavy mental conditioning, performance-enhancing drugs, and extremely harsh combat training. They were more stable than first-stage Extendeds but required regular reconditioning, especially when their block words were used to force actions from them. They also required regular brain "maintenance" to keep them in a high-performance state and to erase any "undesirable" memories they might possess. Sting Oakley, Stella Loussier, and Auel Neider were second-stage Extended humans; all three died in combat throughout the course of the Second Bloody Valentine War. It should be noted that Phantom Pain pilot Sven Cal Bayan stated that Extendeds do not live very long.
First-stage Extended humans possessed strong enough combat abilities to press even very strong Coordinators such as Kira Yamato or Athrun Zala. However, second-stage Extended humans proved to be somewhat weaker than their predecessors; evidence of this is the fact that they could not hold their own vs characters in SEED mode, while the first-stage Extendeds did. However, the second-stage Extendeds appear to be much more mentally stable than the first-stage Extendeds and have been intended to be more "useful"; Sting, Auel, and Stella demonstrated that they were not only fair pilots, but also capable of blending into a crowd and acting (at least somewhat) like normal teenagers, capable of taking orders from superiors better, capable of man-to-man combat on an excellent level, and easier to control than first-stage Extendeds. Extended humans could be considered analogous to the Universal Century concept of "Artificial" or "Cyber-Newtypes", who were normal pilots enhanced to have Newtype abilities.
Deeper Explanation of the "SEED" Factor
Spoiler!
The SEED factor (Superior Evolutionary Element Destined-factor) is a controversial and as yet unproven theory about the continuation of human evolution. Both Coordinators and Naturals can possess "the SEED," and those who do are thought by some to be the next stage of human development. This bears some similarity to the Newtype theory of the Universal Century, but the abilities of those with SEED factor appear to be unrelated to Newtype potential. While acceptance of SEED theory is limited, Orb engineer Erica Simmons and prominent religious leader and peace activist Reverend Malchio are known adherents of the theory.
SEED mode represents the ability for an individual with the SEED factor to enter into a state of enhanced awareness and peak physical ability. (I.E. - Berserk) While in this state, the person (usually a mobile suit pilot, but not necessarily) demonstrates heightened reflexes and extremely quick information processing. This ability is usually triggered by extreme situations or from recalling significant traumas, often arising out of a need to protect someone else in a critical situation.
FAITH
Spoiler!
FAITH (Fast Acting Integrate Tactical Headquarters)
FAITH (Fast Acting Integrate Tactical Headquarters) is an elite subset of ZAFT personnel that have remarkable war records and certain character traits. They are appointed by the PLANT council or the Chairman, to whom they are solely answerable. Their authority is above those of Squadron Commanders, and can presumably give strategic orders on the spot or override any orders given to them by anyone other than the Council.
Known members of FAITH include: Henri Eugenie, Heine Westenfluss, Athrun Zala, Talia Gladys, Shinn Asuka, and Rey Za Burrel.
Character Inrtoductions
Spoiler!
Earth Alliance/O.M.N.I. (Oppose Militancy & Neutralize Invasion) Enforcer Stella Loussier
When first introduced in the series, Stella is portrayed as an innocent girl, dancing around and looking at pretty dresses in the windowsill. Though even then we get a foreshadow that there is more to her when she gives Shinn a very threatening look after he catches her once they collide in the streets. And again, her other side is shown, when she (along with Sting and Auel) takes out numerous ZAFT members to get to three new mobile suits; Without any hesitation, Stella attacks one person after the other with only a knife. On the battlefield, she is again shown with an insane look in her eyes, killing anything that comes in her way. But as soon as she is out of the cockpit, she is back to her innocent self, possibly not even aware of what she has just done.
Sting Oakley
Sting, along with Auel Neider and Stella Loussier, are the three Extended pilots of the Earth Alliance’s special forces team, called Phantom Pain. Together with his comrades he sneaks into the PLANT colony Armory One, where he steals one of the three new Gundam-type mobile suits, the ZGMF-X24S Chaos.
He is involved in two other battles in space (the first in the debris belt, the second on the remnants of the destroyed PLANT colony Junius 7) and after the start of the Second Bloody Valentine War, Sting and the rest of Phantom Pain go to Earth. On Earth, he and his comrades engage in several battles with against the ZAFT ship Minerva, but meet with little success. Sting often fights against Athrun Zala in the ZGMF-X23S Saviour.
Auel Neider
Auel is considered to be the "most" mentally stable of the of three and actually seems to care about his team members in the Phantom Pain. Auel, along with Stella, has a block word, the block word unleashes hidden memories and often throws him in fits of dispair
Block word
Auel's block word is "Mother", probably because his mother was one of the staff that was killed in the struggle. When the word is said around him, he suffers from a flashback just before the lab was suppose to be destroyed. He then yells out for someone to save his mom.
Auel often used Stella as a weapon by saying her block word: "die," when the trio is in trouble. On the contrary however, he is also shown to be at least somewhat protective of her. When low-ranking Earth Alliance soldiers attempt to abduct Stella for an unknown reason, he attacks them, nearly knocking out one and threatens them in case they do not stop.
Neo Roanoke
He is introduced in Gundam SEED Destiny as the captain of the Earth Alliance Forces 81st Autonomous Mobile Group, commonly known as the Phantom Pain. In this capacity he takes orders from Lord Djibril and is in direct command of the three Extended pilots Sting Oakley, Stella Loussier, and Auel Neider. Neo and his stealth warship, the Girty Lue, engage in repeated battles with the ZAFT battleship Minerva over the course of the series, including interfering in ZAFT's efforts to prevent the Junius Seven colony drop.
Although a ruthless and cunning leader, Neo commands a great deal of trust from his subordinates;[3] he demonstrates some sympathy for the Extended pilots, who are viewed as equipment by most of the Earth Alliance Forces. However, he also manipulates them over the course of the series, and repeatedly breaks promises made to or involving them at orders from Djibril.
Because of the mask he wears, Neo's face is not revealed until late in the series. Initially he pilots a TS-MA4F Exus mobile armor which is very similar in design to Mwu's Moebius Zero, albeit more refined. In skirmishes with ZAFT during the Armory One incident, Neo demonstrates an extrasensory awareness of Rey Za Burrel similar to Mwu's awareness of Raww Le Creuset.
ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty) Shinn Asuka
Shinn grew up in the neutral country of Orb where he lived peacefully with his parents and his younger sister, but this came to an abrupt end when the Earth Alliance attacked the nation on June 15. Only Shinn survives when his family is caught in a crossfire between the GAT-X131 Calamity and the ZGMF-X10A Freedom. It is never made clear which mobile suit, if not both of them, is directly responsible for the deaths of Shinn's family. Orb soldier Captain Todaka then took care of him and later sent him to the PLANTs, where he joins ZAFT and graduates as one of the top students in his class as a “Redcoat.”
After graduation, Shinn is assigned to pilot ZAFT's ZGMF-X56S Impulse mobile suit, and is stationed aboard the battleship Minerva under the command of Talia Gladys along with former military academy classmates Rey Za Burrel, Vino Dupre, Lunamaria Hawke, Meyrin Hawke, and Yolant Kent.
Chairman Gilbert Durandal
Although there isn't much information about Durandal’s past it is revealed that before he was Chairman Durandal, he was Doctor Durandal, a brilliant young physician specializing in genetics and advanced biomedical techniques.
He also was a friend of Rau Le Creuset, who was also his patient, as it appears that it was he who prescribed Le Creuset the pills to stop the pain from his genetic malfunctions. However, despite Gilbert's best efforts to ameliorate his friend's suffering, he could do nothing to "save" Rau from the genetic death sentence to which he was inevitably doomed. Rau's inability to understand the purpose of his existence greatly helped form his opinions about a perfect world society: in his opinion, the Destiny Plan.
In the past he also had a relationship with later Minerva captain Talia Gladys but it seems that she left him because she wanted a child. Nevertheless it appears that in CE 73 they are still sleeping together (which is once shown when they were sharing quarters on the Minerva). In the mid to late stages of Gundam Seed Destiny, it is implied by many fans that this is what caused his idealologies to evolve into something different than that of Rau Le Creuset. This is furthered by the fact that in the fourth Japanese opening theme (Episodes 37- FINAL Episode) when it says "donna PESSIMIST mo koi wo shite kawaru" ("Any pessimist who has known love will change")
Lunamaria Hawke
Lunamaria Hawke is a mobile suit pilot on the Minerva, along with Shinn Asuka and Rey Za Burrel. Lunamaria typically pilots a custom red ZGMF-1000 ZAKU. Lunamaria appears to wear a customised version of the ZAFT red ace uniform, replacing the standard female-issue skirt with a mini-skirt. She attended ZAFT military academy together with her sister Meyrin Hawke, Shinn Asuka, Rey Za Burrel, Vino Dupre, and Yolant Kent. Later all are stationed on board the Minerva.
Rey Za Burrel
Rey Za Burrel is a quiet, cool-headed, and polite soldier who keeps himself out of other people's way. He is one of the elite young mobile suit pilots in ZAFT known as "Redcoats" or simply "Reds" for their uniform (a symbol of graduation at the top of the military cadet class). Aboard the Minerva, Rey is friends with fellow ace pilot Shinn Asuka. Rey is very close to and respectful of Chairman Gilbert Durandal.
Talia Gladys
Talia Gladys is captain of the newly commissioned Minerva. She has shown good instinctive battle tactics and often orders the support ZAKU units to stay close to the ship, limiting the amount of damage done to the ship. However her strategic prowess is somewhat lacking, sometimes relying on others to organize battle plans. Captain Gladys does not use the resources of the Minerva recklessly or without provocation. She has been seen to use the Minerva's "Tannhäuser" positron beam cannon normally as a last resort. Her strengths eventually earn her an appointment into FAITH.
While a good tactician, she sometimes has a hard time asserting her authority with some of her mobile suit pilots. This is made worse when two of them are also appointed into FAITH. Even though her crew is loyal to her, Gladys's own loyalties sometimes seem to waver. She clearly disagrees with many decisions handed down to her by the top brass in ZAFT and the PLANT Supreme Council, but despite personal misgivings, she always follows her orders. Her inability to do what sometimes she believes is right makes her vulnerable to manipulation.
In fact, this loyalty (possibly due to a previous relationship with Gilbert Durandal) is one of the greatest differences between Talia Gladys and her closest contemporary, Murrue Ramius. While Ramius, who serves as captain of the ship Archangel in Gundam SEED, takes her ship and its crew and deserts the Earth Alliance when their superiors plan to sacrifice them in battle; Gladys and the Minerva (save for Athrun Zala and Meyrin Hawke) remain loyal to ZAFT throughout the whole series even when she knows Durandal has made morally questionable choices.
Heine Westenfluss
Heine Westenfluss is a Coordinator ZAFT pilot who originally piloted the orange mobile suit Blaze ZAKU Phantom, and later the orange mobile suit ZGMF-X2000 GOUF Ignited. Heine joined ZAFT on February 21, CE 68 and is considered an ace pilot of ZAFT, not only wearing the ZAFT red uniform, given to pilots who have graduated at the top of their class, but also with the FAITH insignia on his uniform, indicating that he is of the FAITH detachment and reports directly to Chairman Gilbert Durandal. Heine first appeared in episode 19 ("The Unseen Truth"), where he was there to escort Athrun Zala, Shinn Asuka, and Lunamaria Hawke to meet Chairman Durandal at Diocuia after the Battle of Gulnahan. However, it has been confirmed that the orange mobile suit that appeared in the Battle of Aprilius One in episode 9 ("Prideful Fang") is the Blaze ZAKU Phantom piloted by Heine; his performance in the battle has been noted as exceptional, as he destroyed a great number of mobile suits and several battleships. He also fought previously in the Bloody Valentine War (in particular the Second Battle of Jachin Due) as a pilot for the Hawkins team, operating the YFX-600R GuAIZ Experimental Firearms Type and fought against Earth Alliance ace Morgan Chevalier.
Athrun Zala
After the war, Athrun and the other surviving members of the Le Creuset team, Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman are tried for their actions. They were ably defended by Gilbert Durandal.
Athrun leaves ZAFT and moves to Orb, living under the pseudonym Alex Dino (アレックス・ディノ Arekkusu Deino, Alex Dino?).[2] During the Armory One Incident, he is present in PLANT as Cagalli's aide and bodyguard,[2] and is involved in the fighting to retake the stolen units. He later joins the battleship Minerva and fights against the terrorists in the Junius Seven Colony Drop alongside Shinn Asuka and former team mates Yzak Joule and Dearka Elsman. Aboard the Minerva, he is unmasked by Gilbert Durandal, the Chairman of PLANT who had joined the Minerva in its pursuit of the mobile suit thieves. Athrun nearly dies during this battle, but is rescued by Shinn.
Athrun and Cagalli then desembark Minerva at Orb, where Cagalli's political duties keep them separated much of the time. Seeing the deteriorating political situation, Arthun decides to return to PLANT. Before leaving, Athrun silently slides a ring onto Cagalli's finger, which leads to an awkward moment before they regain their composure and share an emotional farewell, including a kiss.
United Emirates of Orb Cagalli Yula Athha
Cagalli Yula Athha is the adopted daughter of Uzumi Nara Athha, Representative and "Lion" of the Orb Union. She is also Kira Yamato's twin sister, although neither is aware of this until late in the Bloody Valentine War. While Kira is a Coordinator (a person who is genetically-altered), Cagalli is a Natural.
Kira Yamato
Kira has been living on a secluded island (one of the Marshall Islands) in Orb territory since the end of the war.[2] He and Lacus have spent the last two years after the war assisting Reverend Malchio and Kira's adoptive mother with his orphanage.[2] The Junius Seven Colony Drop Incident, which triggers the Second Bloody Valentine War forces the group to move in with Murrue Ramius and Andrew Waltfeld at their shared mansion in Orb. As the events escalate, the mansion is destroyed by an unknown force of Coordinators trying to assassinate Lacus. The attempt on Lacus's life forces Kira to once again pilot the rebuilt Freedom and participate in combat in order to protect his loved one, despite her reluctance in his taking up arms again. He still abides by his policy to limit casualties, by disabling the opposing mobile suits in SEED mode, though the pilots then self-destruct their machines briefly shocking him.
Kira and Lacus return to the Archangel as Orb joined the Earth Alliance, forcing them to take up secretive residence in the Kingdom of Scandinavia. Before leaving Orb, Kira kidnaps Cagalli from her arranged marriage to Yuna Roma Seiran, despite Cagalli's initial objections. He also helps Cagalli realize her mistake in letting Orb side with the Earth Alliance and helps her come to terms with her errors in judgement, despite her good intentions.
Lacus Clyne
At the start of Gundam SEED Destiny, Lacus is living with Kira at Reverend Malchio's orphanage in the Marshall Islands until a disaster forces her, Kira, the Reverend, and their charges to move in with Andrew Waltfeld and Murrue Ramius at their shared mansion in Orb. Meanwhile, PLANT Supreme Council Chairman Gilbert Durandal, in need of political clout, showcases Meer Campbell as Lacus, using her to influence the populace. The real Lacus is almost killed in a would-be assassination attempt, but Kira fights off the assassins with the Freedom. She, along with Murrue Ramius, Kira, Andrew Waltfeld, Cagalli Yula Athha, and most of the Archangel's crew reunite hoping to stop the new war. Lacus acts as the CIC officer for the Archangel until Cagalli takes over.
Miriallia Haw
In Gundam SEED Destiny, Miriallia is shown working as a freelance photographer, covering events such as the damage caused by Junius Seven and Meer Campbell's promotional appearance on Earth. However, subsequent cameos reveal that her new career doubles as a front for her actions as an agent of Terminal, the information group allied with many former members of the Three Ships Alliance. By chance, she meets Athrun again and learns of his rejoining ZAFT. Athrun asks about her relationship with Dearka. She does not reply, but later tells others she had dumped Dearka (something the crew did not find surprising).
Andrew Waltfeld
After the Bloody Valentine War, Andy enlists in the Orb military and is given a field commission. He lives in the Orb Union with Murrue Ramius, who also lost a lover in the war. As an additive protection measure, his new (apparently fully-functional) cybernetic prosthetic arm conceals a shotgun. When Reverend Malchio's orphanage is destroyed by the fall of Junius Seven, Andy and Murrue open their home to Malchio and his orphans. He alerted the ZAFT battleship Minerva of Orb's alliance with the Earth Alliance and told them to leave (he told them he was a messenger for Andrew Waltfeld, something Murrue giggled at). He planned on moving to the PLANTs with Kira, Lacus, and perhaps Murrue, because of Orb joining with the Earth Alliance; but this plan fell through due to the assassination attempt.
Murrue Ramius
After the Bloody Valentine War, Murrue Ramius is commissioned into the Orb military. She lives in the Orb Union with Andrew Waltfeld, whose lover Aisha was killed in a battle with Kira Yamato during the previous war. After the fall of the Junius Seven colony forces Kira and Lacus Clyne to move in with Murrue and Andrew, the two adults help take care of the orphans from Reverend Malchio's orphanage, as well as becoming bodyguards for Lacus. Under the assumed name of "Maria Bernes",[2] she works as the head of Morgenroete's "ship building division B", alongside Kojiro Murdoch and possibly other former Archangel crew members. She meets Talia Gladys, when the Minerva's repairs were assigned to her department.
Since the end of the first Bloody Valentine War, Murrue has grown fond of Kira and sees him as a younger brother, taking time to offer advice to Kira when they are alone. Murrue helps to keep Kira's spirits up when Lacus leaves the Archangel to coordinate Terminal's efforts in space.
Logos/Blue Cosmos Lord Djibril
Lord Djibril is a member of the secret society, "Logos", and is also the successor to former Blue Cosmos leader, Muruta Azrael. Djibril is first seen in Gundam SEED Destiny during the Junius Seven colony drop; at the time, he was at a meeting with top Logos officials to discuss what would happen after the incident. Djibril decided that Junius Seven hitting the Earth would be a shameful incident for all those living on Earth, that the PLANTs (and by extension, all Coordinators) were at fault, and that they must all be exterminated; the members of Logos all agreed to this decision, hence reviving Blue Cosmos' plan to exterminate all Coordinators.
Logos/Blue Cosmos
Spoiler!
Blue Cosmos/Logos
"For the preservation of our Blue and Pure World!" - Motto of Blue Cosmos
Blue Cosmos is the most radical of the anti-Coordinator activist groups formed by resentful Naturals and is the ruling force behind the Earth Alliance. According to the Blue Cosmos ideology, genetic modification is a violation of the natural order, and all Coordinators must be exterminated "for the preservation of our blue and pure world."
Though the political opinions of the Earth Alliance senior leadership generally varied, Some of the Atlantic Federation leadership were Blue Cosmos members, and after the elimination of enough of the Eurasian military at the Battle of JOSH-A for policy change, Blue Cosmos controlled Alliance OMNI Enforcer by default. After this point, the Alliance's war effort changed from one of conquest to one of extermination, a change that a Patrick Zala-led ZAFT was only too happy to emulate.
Blue Cosmos was originally an environmental pressure group, but after George Glenn revealed his secret in CE 15, they changed their emphasis to terrorizing and killing Coordinators. Many of the top echelon of Blue Cosmos, including its leader Muruta Azrael, were killed during the closing battles at Jachin Due.
Unfortunately, this did not affect Blue Cosmos in any meaningful way - Cagalli Yula Athha's visit to ZAFT at the start of Gundam SEED Destiny is due in large part to pressure on the Orb Union from the Atlantic Federation, which is still partially controlled by Blue Cosmos, under the control of its new leader, Lord Djibril. In addition, there are growing evidences that Blue Cosmos may be nothing more than a catspaw for a shadowy military-industrial organization known only as Logos.
However one Logos member, Matias Aducarf, betrayed his comrades and submitted information on Logos to Gilbert Durandal. With this information, PLANT Chairman Gilbert Durandal held a speech in which he revealed the existence of Logos to the entire world and afterwards, he declared that he planned to completely destroy this organization. Afterwards, ZAFT launched a campaign to destroy Logos and Blue Cosmos once and for all. Many people on Earth also started to attack the homes of Logos members and many of them were either murdered or forced to flee. They made their unsuccessful last stand against ZAFT/Alliance forces attacking Heaven's Base, their headquarters in Iceland. After the battle, Lord Djibril (the last remaining known member) fled to the Orb Union and afterwards to the Daedalus lunar base. From there he attacked PLANT with the superweapon Requiem in order to destroy the PLANT Supreme Council, however when the Minerva attacked, he was forced to flee on the Girty Lue. But before he could escape the ship was shot down by Rey Za Burrel, which also killed Djibril and thus the last remaining Logos member.
It is obvious that Blue Cosmos/Logos conducted far more inhuman genetic modifications (to unwilling, kidnapped and/or drafted children, no less) than the process of creating Coordinators. The Extended laboratory at Lodonia was ZAFT's gruesome evidence to reveal Logos and that its "Puritan" view of genetic modification was blind and one-sided for unlike embryo modification, the Extended process literally killed numerous children and scientists. The children were not merely trained as their brains were also removed, altered then placed back in. In short, there was some truth to Durandal's anti-Logos speech and that they, much more so than the Coordinators, were the true inhuman monsters.
