Re: Subbed or Dubbed?

No, DBZ was not well dubbed:P

I allways check if the dub is good when watching a new show, but 99% of the time its not. gonna have to copy/paste what I wrote in a different thread:

Japanese voice actors tend to be VERY emotionally involved in their work, while most americans tend to completely over-act, put on silly voices and generally not giving the characters any respect. Perfect examples are Naruto and Luffys american voices. They are very unrealistic, don't fit the characters, are very over-acted/ (or under-acted), very cheesy, and for some reason the actors feel they have to gravell them up :S
Shonen shows generally don't make for good english dubs:P "gomu gomu no pistol" just doesn't sound good with a gravlly english voice:P

The excepshions are Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy bebop, Last exile, wolfs Rain, Samurai Champloo, Samurai 7 + some more. All these have on-the-whole VERY good voice acting in the english dub. FMA,LE and wolfs rain I actually prefer the english ones. (The jap ones here are fabolous as well ofc)

To sum it up, SOME Dubs are good, but on the whole go with Jap. They generally take their job more seriouse.
+Some actors on shows like One Piece, have been doing the same character for over 10 years ^^

Edit: The biggest problem in Dub is the female voices, mostly for less important characters, and kids.
I would say in Wolfs Rain EVERY main character has a great voice that really suits their character, FMA has some that might seem cheesy but bloddy love most of them. (Armstrong is perfectly akward:P)

Re: Subbed or Dubbed?

I would also have to say subbed anime for me. I believe that dubbed anime takes the idea of what an anime is away...What I mean is that anime was meant to be done in Japanese and dubbing it in English makes it an entire different entity. Although I must say, I watch anime in raw most of the time

Re: Subbed or Dubbed?

I prefer subbed. It helps me understand the Japanese sentence structure better and I like to hear the original seiyuus.

Re: Subbed or Dubbed?

Subbed, it's better because you tend to pick up japanese words better and it can eventually help you to watch raw animes

Re: Subbed or Dubbed?

Short answer: dubbed

I understand both sides of the story though. The japanese version is like the original intent of the writers and things can be lost in translation. But sometimes the japanese version doesn't come across the way that it should to some1 who doesn't speak it either. Its easier to relax and watch in english though. Also, sometimes in the japanese version it sounds like everybody has had to much caffiene.

Bottom line is that a good show is good in any language.
