in a female perspective;; getting hugs from behind should be someone special. Like a bf/gf/signiificant other. If a random guy hugged me from behing.. i'd be a lil freaked out; even if it was my friend.

but general hugs are okay. For me i'd hug ppl that are my friends. No strangers. Lol or acquaintances

I like hugs and like PunkinPnay said hugs from behind should not be done randomly as I'm one of those girls that will not hesitate to break something and should be limited to close friends and significant others but normal hugs i.e. from the front or side are quite okay and I don't mind hugging people I've only met once except when I'm being awkward

Hugs from behind often catch us off guard and the natural instinct is to react in a protective manner which if it were actually my bf would appear to be a very negative reaction. Though if that were the case, I'd probably apologize and say that you startled me. In a situation where you know the other person will be your significant other, hugs from behind can be very romantic. Most effectively done slowly unless your intent is to try and surprise her. Hugs from behind can easily lead to many more events; which if the mood is right can be very pleasant. Because of this possible outcome, we're particularly vulnerable in that state and if it isn't with someone trusted or done with good timing the first reaction is usually to quickly turn around to get out of their grasp and see how it is.
