Some recommendation for newbie?

Hi to all.
I'm new here and I can say that I'm (relatively) new to anime, even if I'm familiar with it from my child days.
Now I want to be more familiar with anime, but in what I'm interested is 'serious anime' (I call it that because I don't know if there is word for that or does anime have some types by what I mean). By 'serious anime' I mean at anime with more 'real' or really quality drawing or some really artistic, good story and mature theme (like movies).
This ones are one of which I like:
Ghost in the Shell (1 (specially) & 2)
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (1st one still didn't watch, hope soon to get it)
Ergo Proxy

I hope that will recive some recommendation for that sort of anime. Any reply is more than appreciated.

Thx guys, I really appreciate every recommend.
Now I watched Afro Samurai (1st ep.) and really like it (animation specialy)
And I also downloaded 1st episodes of Blades of the Immortal, Gungrave, Death Note, Gilgamesh, Hellsung Ultimate and I think they also may be interesting (animation style/quality is first what I look) and hope that from those may be good ones...

Now, because I have limited download traffic per month, can someone (can I say) direct me which of those is the best anime to download it first and are all of those good enough...?

You'll want to see Cowboy Bepop. IMO the best one out there to this day. It contains excellent amount of different elements, and I don't think you'd be disappointed.
Though you might want to push it later and enjoy it after seeing one or two other series. ;)

From your choices I'm mostly familiar with Hellsing and Death Note, which of both are pretty good to start with. I think Death Note is a bit more psychological, more action with Hellsing.

Thx everyone. Now I started with Death Note (so far I love it, something that really suit me). Next will probably be Hellsing: Ultimate. That will be for this mount, and next who know where I will stuck ;)

Cowboy Bepop is something that I had eye on it a long time (but somehow alway forget about it, I watched few episodes few years ago).

I'm still open for recommendations...

I second Cowboy Bebop, its a total classic if you haven't already seen it
Black Lagoon is also a really nice series, or at least i thought so xD
