Re: i'm anti Dub now

I must ask those who hate dubs.

Why exactly do you hate them? Other than the original poster, whose post was completely unreadable, none of you have said any reasons. Just "it's not japanese."

Are all dubs good? No. Early ADV dubs were for the most part bad (with horrible puns and in-jokes placed in), and 4Kids is just awful. Are all dubs bad? Hell no. In many cases, the dub is not only very good, but in fact better than the original japanese voice action. Let me name off a few examples.

Gundam. Overall, this series is just better in english. The second series in the franchise, Zeta Gundam, had issues when brought over. Due to copyright issues, not even Japan can use it's original opening song (evidenced by it's lack in Gundam vs. Gundam for PSP). To counter this, Bandai used a piece of music and added appropriate sound effects for the action going on screen. The difference is phenominal, turning from a generic japanese pop song into an epic sounding piece that made you know you were in for a wild ride.

Also, several characters just sound excellent in english. The antagonist of Gundam SEED was given a bit more hint of insanity in the english version in my opinion. And comparing the english and japanese voices of Master Asia in G Gundam is like comparing wine with cheap beer.

GaoGaiGar. I will admit, I love this show. But the japanese voices for Mamoru and Mic Sounders are just god awful. Mamoru is constantly saying "Wa ha!" and Mic Sounders is just horrible sounding in his non-rock star form. What little english dub exists (thanks to Media Blasters whoring Voltron nostalgia) is just excellent. No wa has and Mic sounds much better. And the president of G3 is voiced by DAN GREEN!

Anything with Steve Blum. Does this really need much a reason? The man is just awesome. Big O, Cowboy Bebop, name a series he's in and you'll know the dub is good.

Desert Punk. The original japanese version has some funny moments, but the english script completely redid everything. In doing so, the characters became much more sarcastic and interesting. The uninteresting plot in the second half was also given a definite boost.

I think that alot of english voice actors are just given a bad rap. Let's look at one of my favorites, David Kaye. Inuyasha fanatics complain that Sesshoumaru's voice is horrible in the dub and the guy voicing him is a hack. This couldn't be further from the truth. David Kaye played as Megatron in 5 consecutive Transformers shows, starting with Beast Wars. His almost orgasmic use of the word "Yes.." and his portrayal of the character turned the leader of the Predacons into a James Bond villian. And we loved it. He is by far the best guy to ever play him, even better than Frank Welker. The only issue with him in Inuyasha is he got stuck with a horrible character. Sesshoumaru has no motivation other than being butthurt about not getting a certain sword and displays absolutely no emotion. Comparing him with Megatron, who had motivation and gloated upon every victory and raged with every failure, you can see the problem.

In short, at least give an english version a chance. These people work hard trying to please you, and even if you don't like it, at least respect the work they do so they can put food on their tables.

Re: i'm anti Dub now

personally, i would like to watch anime without dub or even bad subs.
it is hard to understand anime with wrong translations.

translations of japanese to other asian languages are quite awesome because they might have similar expressions. However, others might not have this advantages.

still dub could help anime lovers to understand anime. For me, i like to watch "My home" in korean rather than in japanese.

but i enjoy anime more with sub than dub.

"Generic japanese pop song"?! Zeta's opening themes were based on Neil Sedaka's melodies, and I don't consider them as "generic". The instrumental opening theme sounds like it was ripped-off from Star Wars.

Re: i'm anti Dub now

This is why dual audio is preferable, because you have a choice. You can then watch in your favorite format, be it dubbed or in Japanese with subtitles, or just Japanese for you polyglots out there.

It's music straight from the Zeta soundtrack. Besides, if your bitching about ripping off Star Wars, watch Gundam F91. Awesome movie (although the plot goes faster than it should), but they took Star Wars music. One scene even has the Imperial March.

Also, they don't have the copyrights to the songs anymore. If you play Gundam Vs. Gundam for PSP, every stage has a theme song from their respective show. Except Zeta Gundam. It uses the opening for the english release. Heck, even the rereleases of Zeta Gundam in Japan uses the same opening now. Why? Because it's kick ass.

Re: i'm anti Dub now

I've been anti-dub since I realized that the english translations were really butchered. Not only do they ruin most of the jokes but most of the time they make the male protagonists sound like pussies. Inuyasha is a great example. In the dub that airs in america Inuyasha sounds like such a pussy. But in the original Japanese version you can hear MUCH more sarcasm in his voice but they just didn't care to do it right in the dubbed version. If you want to see the real story then subs are the only way to go. I pretty much refuse to watch anything that is dubbed with only a very few exceptions. (like FLCL is ok dubbed)

Oh yeah, someone reminded me. You also lose the original emotion and the directors intended vision for how they wanted the anime to be. So much is lost in a dub most of the time.

Even with a good dub I'll still only watch animes subbed cause they can't get it 100% right. Good fan subbers will explain cultural references in a little note at the top of the screen or something.

I hate it when fansubbers do that. Yes, keikaku means plan, so why don't you just type plan? No need to weeaboo it up so badly.

And it distracts from the action when they place it there, so you have to pause it to read their long winded descriptions. Why not just add a little extra to the video after the end of the episode?

Re: i'm anti Dub now

Not all dubs are bad by me. Eureka seveN had a good one, FLCL wasn't so bad, GitS was very good. There are crap ones like Stardust Memory and SEED which make me cringe.
