Quite a while ago I rented an anime dvd. I don't remember it very clearly (it was about a team that fought monsters or something) but the one episode that I remember most is one where a cult (or a group of people) organized illegal fights where real people fought to the death on a ring shaped like a chess board. If I remember correctly one of the characters was captured and put to fight in one of those fights. Does anyone know of what anime I'm talking about?

If the character that got captured had red hair then I think what you thinking of is Weis Kreuz or knight hunters the the anime summary if you're still not sure that's what it is
