The way I heard it is that the real purpose of prayer is to ask God for what he's already going to do anyway. Besides that, there was the thing about the Sabbath, and if somebody falls in a hole then you should stop praying and help him. There was also the thing about the coat and Jesus saying don't ask God to give a man a coat if you have one that you can give him. Which may be a really bad comparison because of the gravity of the kid's situation, but may parallel it. Yeesh, sorry for being wordy.
