They're a little different but its worth trying games from Nippon Ichi, Gust, Atlus, and VanillaWare (I played and liked all of these):

Disgaea Hour of Darkness, Odin Sphere, Soul Nomad, La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom

You can just go to GameFAQs to look up a list of games by those companies by clicking their name when you check out any one of these titles.

[Edit] Forgot about Xenosaga. If not all 3, at least the first game is very much worth playing.
