Buppah Rahtree: Flower of the Night, directed by Yuthlert Sippapak is a wonderful film from Thailand that successfully blends horror, drama, and comedy. A seemingly simple love / ghost story, the film subtly expands it’s hold on the viewer to create a complex tale of love and horror. The characters are very real and rife with hopes, flaws and frailty. Ultimately it is an extremely sad tale that shows the terrible cost of exploited love and the price that must be paid for redemption. There are a number of poignant conflicting themes that weave throughout; wealth and poverty, love and sex, trust and deceit, forgiveness and hatred. There is also the rather comic look at the lengths one must go to rid themselves of an unwanted malevolent spirit.
Preventing the story from being a complete heart-wrenching downer, director Sippapak sprinkles the film with a terrific supporting cast of everyday characters that successfully deflects the horrific into welcoming moments of light-hearted comedy and touching drama. Rahtree is an extremely well balanced film that is as fine as any I have recently seen. Having not seen many films from Thailand, I can say with certainty that Buppah Rahtree will have me looking out for more.
