Personally if you're going to color the entire series I'd use the Pen Tool in Photoshop and set it to Shape Layers. Then I'd trace the inside of your object and make the vector mask the color of your choice and set it to about 75% opacity and then add your shading etc. Then when your done shading play around with the opacity until your happy with the results.
